I REAALLLYYYY hate some petstores. The other day, a new pet store in my town just opened up. Today, I went to go check it out. I was looking around to see if there were any birds. Didn't see anything. Not even supplies for bird, escept for seeds. Ok, that's fine, not every pet store has animals. So, just as I was about to leave an aisle, I saw a very small cage. It was about the size of a child's shoe box. When I looked in side I was mortified. There's was only one perch, no toys, two very small dishes filled with food and water, and..... 7 PARAKEETS crammed in this little cage. 4 were on crammed on the perch and 3 were on the floor because there was no room for them on the perch. And there was no grate so they were pretty much sitting on poop and had poop on them from the birds above. Plus, the store was charging $40 per bird. I said to myself, out loud in the store, "ARE YOU F#$%*@ KIDDING ME?" (Thank goodness no one heard me). So I marched straight to the manager's office, told him everything I saw wrong, this was his response, "So, they're just birds, they don't need that much maitnence, plus, these are purebred budgerigars!" Well, you're having "purebred budgerigars" sitting in a cage full of sh*t (Please excuse my language, I'm just really angry) and those are plain everyday parakeet, not budgerigars! He also said that toys, healthy food, and interaction are just myths, and they don't need it. I kept trying to explain it to him but he wouldn't listen. So I just walked out because there was nothing I could do at that moment. Anybody have any advice for what I should do? I can't stand the thought of these parakeets getting sick, dying, having people spend $40 on them, and buying them if they're sick. Any advice?

I already did for other pet stores but they can't take animals in situations like that which, in my personal opionion, and please excuse my language, is complete and totall bull****

:(There are a lot of people out there with no conscience and the world is a terrible place somtimes, its so sad we have to witness it, the bottom line is we cant change the world but good for you for at least trying to help! I hope that karma is real, or god, or cosmic justice ...whatever... I just hope they get theirs! Try not to think about it, treat your animals extra good tonight, and be glad your not evil!:D

I came on a similar situation once. I tried reasoning with the owner. When that proved unsuccessful I wrote a blistering letter to the editor of the town's local newspaper. I gave a copy to the owner and said that I would submit it only if in one week the conditions he was keeping his parrot in were not made humane. I offered help on finding a reasonable cage and other supplies . He furiously declined the help but did make radical changes in the bird's living conditions. About six months later a sign went on the cage that the bird needed a new home. The parrot was purchased cheaply by a family and hopefully did well post that.

Could the humane society or something charge them for not having satisfactory living conditions for their animals ????
By the sounds if it these birds won't have had their wings clipped if I were you I'd go along and mess around with the cage so thr bottom fell off or something
I know what I'm suggesting ain't exactly legal and there a chance of injury to thr birds but a chance at freedom sounds better than what they have now

This is so sad. It always breaks my heart to read about such carelessness, and lack of conscience. The ignorance of people today is also very shocking; how could someone assume that a bird doesn't require social interaction?

Good for you; going to the manager like you did. But what a shame that he didn't care. I really don't know what you could do for those poor birds.

Ap I feel your

and frustration.
Go into a previous post "disgusting for a pet shop"
I recall members were willing to assist me further, if matters did not improve.
Thank you for speaking on behalf of our feathered friends that can't speak for themselves.

I understand how you feel.
I feel the same when I see a local parrot shop here,
10, yes no kidding, 10 grey parrots in a cage (which the size is for a mini-macaw).

ARRRRGGGGG!! :headwall: Some people. If I was you I would have rushed in there and litterally slapped that manager silly. I admire your restaint!! (LOL!!). This is why I refuse to go into a few petshops in the City. Petland here is actually exellent at taking care of birds so is petsmart, they have a avian vet next door, who gives them loads of information. Good for you for sticking up for what you believe in. That takes guts!

Give me their number, and I will call em' up and work my 'I am gonna yell at you' magic ;)

I found an interesting website that has info concerning federal and state laws, rules and regulations that pertain to the health, care and housing of animals in petstores, unfortunatly most all do not cover birds.......AP if you can't find who regulates petstores in your state, you may try calling your local ASPCA or Animal Control Services if you have one and ask them, if its a "Chain Store" petstore you can contact their home office and complain, if its local, try and find out if the owner is involved in daily operations and complain to him directly, kudos to you for making an effort on changing poor conditions;)....$40 for a budgie WOW!, and I thought $25 was expensive here:11:

Same thing happened to me. Unfortunately people don't listen to twelve year olds, so what happens? I find the sick bird I warned them about sitting half dead in the middle of the road!!!!!!!!

As much as I would love to do that, those birds will not last at least 1 hour over where I live. Too many predators and not a lot of good for them here.

I agree with you, I dispise most of the petshops in my town and there's about 15 stores. I cringe when I walk into them. The only respectable pet shops that actually takes care of their birds is my Petco and another store in my town, I forgot what it's called.
As for you "yelling" magic (LOL) I don't think it'll work. The manager is really stubborn :headwall:

Thanks for that great link, Bob, it's in my favorites now :D Unfortunately, most of the bird laws don't include NY.

I did call my local SPCA, they said they can't take the birds in this situation. It's not something they can do, so Animal shelters and regulators are out. It's not a chain store, that I know. I will do more digging in for any numbers or names to yell at ;)
I agree. The actual fair price for a parakeet in NY is about $15-20.

That is just rotten Ap, those poor little budgies. Good on you for trying to rectify the situation, too bad he didn't listen. To be honest, sounds like the manager is a bit of a prick and needs a good kick where the sun don't shine ;)

Don't know if it would work or not but you can try contacting the better business bueru and complain to them if all else fails

Similar thing happened to me. I took my little cousins to a sort of a zoo (might call it a 'backyard zoo') a year ago, and there was a paddock full of little shetlands who didn't look like they'd seen any care in years. The paddock was tiny, maybe the size of a dressage arena, and had about thirty ponies in it. There were only patches here and there of ground seen through the piles of manure, their coats were all matted and muddy, their manes totally filled with mud and knots. One had a half-healed gash on the side of his belly. They had some hay but it was tossed carelessly to the ground instead of being in some sort of rack, and the ponies had trampled it all with mud and stuff. And there worst part was their feet: they were all tilted back on their ankles because their hooves were so long. They all had enough 'hoof' in each of their hooves to make hooves for a clydesdale (if you get me). The other animals were probably just as bad but I was only familiar with horses so they were the only animals I could definitely tell were mistreated. I called the RSPCA, and according to my uncle who went back a month later, the ponies all had normal-sized looking hooves and there were only five of them in the dressage-arena-sized paddock instead of thirty.
