Today we were visiting family and the kids were playing. My BIL came in the house mad and while working on the side of the house witnessed a truck pull up to his 6 yo son who was playing, stop and the passenger leaned out and started talking to him. BIL yelled for him to get in the house, the truck left. A young woman leaned out of the passenger side and offered the 6 yo candy. It was in the bed of the truck. Talk about hitting a hornets' nest! We do a head count of kids, find them all, talk to the 6 yo who keeps saying the same thing. One of the kids comes in and says the truck is parked around the corner so Husband and I are out of the house going for the truck leaving instructions to call 911.

Husband actually walked next to this truck while I was behind a building filming the truck to get license and information and the passenger says Hi to him. We watched them pull into a fast food restaurant drive thru. Police arrive and stop this truck that has a 30 yo woman and two teenage girls. Police surround the truck, blocking it in the drive thru lane while another cop talks to the 6 yo who keeps telling the same story at the house. Police investigate, no one in the truck has a criminal record and when the police ask the passenger why she did what she did, she says because she thought it would be funny. Seriously? I wonder how funny it ended up being. Talk about a heart attack for all today.

While it was crazy it makes you wonder about people and trust.

thats crazy.
Like talking about a bomb in an airport. you just don't joke about stuff like that.

Some people, what is wrong with them? Beyond belief.

Pleased all are safe with your family Tracey, but does make you wonder what if .....

Just because they had no criminal record, it doesn't mean that they were not intending to do mischief or worse. All it means is that they had never been caught before, or that this was some new idea between some very possibly disturbed people ( try googling Slenderman ). The key for me is that they thought is was going to be funny. I hope the police recorded the incident somewhere. I am glad everyone is safe, but your BIL should be extra vigilant for awhile.

Once upon a time, not that long ago, the police would have let them go with a 'Don't do Stupid Things' discussion. Or, better said, it rarely happens anymore. This likely works into a court appearance and likely ends-up on one of those lists of who's living near you now.

Stupid or sick, it really doesn't matter any more. Like said above, you don't talk about taking a bomb to the airport or the White house. Just not a joking matter!

Crap like that is why I carry a gun.

Try that in my area you're not going to be laughing.

If I may add a little depth to your statement.

You carry so as to allow for the protection of not only yourself, but for your family members, friends and the law abiding people you daily come in contact. As a person that has a permit, you have the training to define when the need a raises that calls for the specific use of deathly force.

Thank-you for taking the time from your busy life and the expense from your limited resources to have the ability to protect those that you love and care for.

How is offering a 6 year old candy out of a truck window funny? That 6 year old certainly would not understand the underlying "humor" in this, and I honestly have my doubts if her excuse has any truth in it at all. "I thought it would be funny" sounds like a cop-out to me to stay out of trouble.

I certainly hope something was done about this, though I don't know what they could actually do. There has to be something that they can be charged with for doing that, like attempted kidnapping or something similar. The fact that she has no criminal record means absolutely nothing, every criminal, every serial killer, rapist, etc. at one time had no criminal record. They all start somewhere.

The cops won't think it's funny at all if this woman kidnaps a child in the future. Scary stuff. I'm very glad everyone is OK, if there is anyway you can spread the word in your community about this woman and give information about her truck, the year, make, model, color(s), plate number, etc. it would be a good idea.

Sailboat, Wrench and Mango,

I raised the question about since they didn't have a criminal record what happens next. He said if it had been a male stopping they would have arrested him immediately. My thought, why is a woman or group of young women different? We see many child endangerment and abuse cases from women now. That didn't answer my question either. Also I noted the truck stopped in front of the house to talk to him per the father and drove off, around the block and parked. I have video of the driver on the phone, video of Husband walking next to the truck and saying Hi back to them and going into the drive thru. The police did make a record of it and he said that the girls were scared and knew something was up when the cops surrounded the drive thru. The mother said her daughter did it because it would be funny. Well Mom, you were driving AND stopped the truck allowing her to ask, not leaving till father yelled. SIL pointed that out too, Mom stopped the truck, looks like she was involved.

So I've archived the video, and sent a copy to my SIL and BIL in case something comes up in the community later. As for guns, we have guns but don't carry them on us all the time and when this popped up, you just react, get the truck plate number, call the police, get as much info as possible. I carry my phone though, first time I've videoed an event and was surprised at how much info I got, body language, info, plate number. I do have to admit for what they did, then driving and parking around the block, that seems odd. If a father yells and you leave, you'd think they'd clear the area, not go order food from a block away. But then again, people can be unpredictable. I've told SIL and BIL, we need to put GPS on the kids, lol!

On point, sir.

Have your BIL and SIL been able to warn other local people with kids in the area, neighbourhood watch scheme? If they are warned they will be more alert to these people in case they are seen again. Sincerely hope it was an act of stupidity and nothing sinister.

Great question and yes, they have thankfully. They visited their neighbors with children and informed them yesterday after the incident. What makes it scarier is they live about a quarter mile from the city park, AND a block from a neighborhood park which the kids go to frequently to play. Now the fear and awareness is heightened in their area. The family has added much more vigilance which is excellent, but at the same time it's fearful and concerning that someone would thing joking about about a luring practice, and/or attempt was done.

Social media makes it so much easier these days to get info out there and include things like vehicle registration number, if these stupid people find out and don't like it tough! Obviously it wont stop them changing their vehicle but a bit of shaming and inconvenience may make them think?
