YEA. We are finally home! I am exhausted from the day trip to Kansas and back but am too keyed up to lay down to sleep. Sir John who is now known as Julio is HOME! I will be downloading pictures to the hard drive tomorrow when I am not so tired.
Since it was a 8 hour drive back Lupe and I talked about a lot of things about Julio and getting him settled in. One thing that is on my mind very strongly is the vet visit. I will be taking him in this week while Lupe is at work so it will be ME that takes Julio to meet his doctor and have his exam and blood drawn. Normally I never thought twice about just taking in my parrots and being there during the exam and blood draws. I use to help with my Noble macaw Mihijo and Illiger's macaw Diego because they was so much calmer that way and would do very well with me there. When I took Valentino he had only known me for 4 days so I really didn't think much about being there during his exam and blood draw either. The vet visit brought Valentino closer to me. He bonded to me more after the visit.
However Julio is 8 years old Noble macaw rescue and he is my first rescue bird. I will be the one bringing him to the vet for his appointment but for the first time I am unsure if I should stay in the room with him or step out while they do his exam and blood draw.
I would like to hear form people who have rescue parrots and have taken them to the vet appointment. How did you handle this? Did you stay with your rescue or step out of the room? Did the vet appointment experience hinder your trust building? If so why do you think the experience broke or hindered your trust building? Did your presence or even helping break your trust building or help with it?
Everything I do with Juilo I am trying to build the trust. So far we had him settle in and I made sure he was able to find his food and water in his new environment and right now he is covered and after making the beak grinding noises of settling in for sleep he is now resting. Over time it is my hope that he will settle in and build trust with both Lupe and I.
