2 Budgies
"Southern Belle" a blue female
"Beau Dandy" a green male
Quick question regarding budgies that are being housed together, I have a bird I am pretty sure is male, dark blue/purple cere, I also have a bird I am thinking is female...this being my first real rodeo with budgies and multiple birds, how likely is egg laying/mating given no nest boxes or nesting material will be provided, they are not related birds so if it were to occur inbreeding would not be a problem...I have no particular interest in breeding them, just looking for some information on how to make it as unlikely as possible. Thanks in advance.

Very Respectfully,

Always a chance with Aussie grass parrots that you'll get eggs. They don't really make nests as such and will happily use any sort of hollow available. Doesn't really need to be more than something that will prevent the eggs rolling away.

In saying that the chances are fairly slight unless there is some sort of concave location they can use as a nest. A cage bottom usually won't do but whenever you put a pair of birds together there is always a chance.

Alright, well other than being let out for an occasional romp in the truck or my house I doubt they will ever have much in the way of access to such a place, so here's to hoping they abstain!

Hey 18WOS, I'm really surprised Noodles123 hasn't chimed in, because she has a list of ideas that normal folks like you and I never think about, like shaded area, under furniture, dark areas, basically any place your budgies could go to seek quietness and solitude, or any materials your babies could destroy to use for nesting material needs to be eliminated from the area that your babies reside. If you will seek her out (Noodles123) in so many of her posts, she warns new bird owners of things your birds seek to create a nest, and area they are most likely to nest, and how to fix these areas so their not used for nesting. Laying eggs for the females happens, the problem I see is the lack of essential vitamins and such, which Leeds to an egg bound bird, which is a killer. Noodles123 covers it so well, as she has a beautiful Female Umbrella. 2nd Noodles123 is very knowledgeable about things most of us overlook, She has a lot of posts concerning cookware, and cleaning agents, what to use and what not to use around our birds, respiratory issues....The list goes on and on, but I suspect Noodles hasn't seen this post yet, because she can really add to the list of what to avoid. If she doesn't chime in shortly, please seek out her posts, even though she has a Cockatoo, she lists concerns involving all birds, and is extremely knowledgeable about this subject, and her sharing her awareness, will surely shed a whole new light on your concerns. I personally would vote in a heartbeat to change her screen name from Noodles123 to Noodles101, She's a heck of an educator, and I almost envision when she's not busy with Noodles, she must stay in her Library researching..... She's really enlightened so many here about dangers, and has probably personally been responsible for keeping half to ¾ of the domestic bird population alive with her research.
