I been on the internet reading up on advice on caring for a Hahns macaws and one site said you should never give your bird tap water because of chlorine but for example buy drinking water. Do you buy water for your macaws or treat the water?

I drink tap water and my bird drinks tap water. I'm fortunate to live in a city with excellent drinking water... But personally I think peoples' concerns over tap water are silly. Water from water coolers can actually be some of the nastiest water because its really quite tricky to properly clean them, and algae and mold grow inside of them.

Chlorine evaporates over time from the water as is. So if you're really concerned you can just leave water out for a day or two. I personally have a glass jug I keep (tap) water in in my fridge. It's always nice and cold and no plastic leaching chemicals in to the water :)

I totally agree with Half's post.....

me too. I use tap water for all my birds, we keep it in a jug with the lid off overnight so any chlorine will burn off before we use it.
It would be way too costly for me to buy water for my 30 + birds, that would put me into the poor house in a hurry.

Florida has terrible water. I have a filter on my sink that we all use for drinking. Birds & us.

I bought a brita filter because I had the same concerns, I feel much better using filtered water then bottled. Half made a very good point x

I use the filtered water from the fridge, the city I live in has very hard water and although I bet it's fine it doesn't taste as good and is not as smooth.
What do you let your green cheek drink? He should get the same quality of water that as your new macaw ;)

If I was ever unsure of water quality I would just buy purified water at the store in 2g containers with built in dispensers for convenience.

Jersey water is as dirty as the rest of the state, so I buy bottled water for my fids. I don't even let my dogs drink tap water because of the nasty smell AND taste. :20:

I use tap for myself and distilled for the birds ever since I saw a documentary about how much medication is in municipal water supplies and they haven't figured out a way to get it out. It was a local clip, I don't know what goes on elsewhere. Especially since I was scared to death over the Giardia thread.

My tap water is a bit high in sulfur levels, so I won't drink it, nor will I ask Sunshine or the cats to do so.
I got a Brita filter instead.

Thanks everyone. I just ordered the Brita filter to be one the safe side and I can also cheaply buy a gallon of drinking water too. Thinking more about it me my dog or my two birds should probably be drinking filtered water.

Get a tds meter. Anything under 100 is ok for you and your bird. If its higher than that then you may want to filter less so due to chlorine and more so due to the solids in the water that can lead to build up of solids in the body.

I have a tendency to think our tap water is okay. (I drink it sometimes.) But, we have two Brita pitchers and I use that for Emmy's drinking water and the water I "shower" her with.

Here in the UK we get hard or soft water, but it's generally not 'bad'. So we'll usually use tap water, but tend to try and go for filtered if we're not rushing about doing all the changing etc.

Me and my partner drink Brita Filtered water, so we try and keep it the same for our pets too. Why should they drink lower quality water when we're not? We brought them here, they didn't choose the life they've got so we should make it the best life we can give. Even if it just means having cool filtered water over tepid tap ;)
