Parrots
Momma to Mochi- Cinnamon Green Cheeked Conure. Hatched 4/18/16
And the new baby, Romeo- Hahn's Macaw. Hatched 4/26/18
Hey All!
Just some geewhiz info, to those who get upset when members jump in and beat your post with quarantining comments, it is most certainly for your best interest, as well as your fids. Please dont get mad, birds dont show feeling bad like we do. Also, unless you have a good savings account set up, or pet insurance, please dont get a parrot as an impulse purchase. To give you an example, my vet appointment, after all recommended test for a new fid, was close to 1100.00. Yes, one thousand one hundred dollars.

As you all know, I got my Hahn's Macaw, Romeo, exactly 2 weeks ago. And thank god he is in quarantine away from Mochi. I have some good news, we're on the mends, but to breakdown my day thus far. Recieved a call from my vet and Romeos white blood cell count was super high. I then called the place I got him at, so they can be on alert that their flock doesnt get sick. Within a day or two of us getting home, one nosrum was clogged then the next day, I was on birdy boogie patrol, (poor guy had snot bubbles out of the other one, and he had to breathe out of his beak). My vet got me in next day. Once we got into the vet, and he started antibiotics. We were given 30 days of ciprofloxin, for 1x day, at 0.02 ml/dose.that has seemed to clear up. During the endoscopy, the cam*showed a cyst or polyp in the back of his throat, a completely blocked nosrum, and a very inflamed throat.* Both nosrums are now clear at least. Romeo seems like he's on the mends and hes an amazingly sweet little thing. Even the vet and his techs said he was a total sweetie to work with, (Romeo yelled once, then just let them work). We have a follow up around the 18th or 19th to draw some more blood and see if the cell count dropped down.*So now we just wait for rest of results, and we have the follow up to get more meds. Fingers crossed all!

And on a different note, i just went back to work, and Mochi is sooo not pleased with this fact lmao! Plus little bugger was super hormonal. I think he may be a she, but i dont want to pluck feathers or draw blood just to find out the gender. So well just go with he. My hands are tore up, and we have developed cage territorial issues. Were working through this and im off today and tomorrow, so hes back to being his little endearing self.

I'm glad he is doing better...Just a point, but if they are already going to draw blood to test is blood-cell counts, you should definitely just have them order a DNA test too, that way there will be no extra blood draw required, and you'll know the sex for certain, which I believe is extremely important for all parrot owners to know. You shouldn't just assume that your bird is a "he", as you need to be prepared for laying of infertile eggs and always looking for the subtle signs of egg-binding, as it is 100% fatal without medical intervention. And since they are already drawing blood anyway, it's a no-brainer.

How terrible to think poor Romeo was suffering in silence all that time, certainly before you got him, the poor baby!

What did the store say when you told them?

Anyway it sounds like you have a wonderful CAV and glad to hear Romeo is on the mend!

As for your darling little Mochi, yes even the sweetest conure will lacerate your fingers every so often but you love em madly anyway. Did you already know “mochi” is a Japanese rice cake? Very cute name :)

Keep us updated on Romeo and yes a very good cautionary tale indeed!

Mochi was legitimately named Mochi because i had a few boxes of different types in my cabinet, and his colors are very similar to theirs. My oldest actually calls him riceball lmao!

The stores policy is to reimburse for the medication. Since he had 3 other cagemates with him, they were very grateful as well, as it would be bad moving through the entire flock. But ues, will definitely be updating.

Oh Mochi super cute and so delicious too :)

Good of the store to compensate you, rightly so, and they certainly need to safeguard the rest of their flock. I imagine you will have a few more vet bills coming soon but Romeo definitely came to the right place with you!

Poor Romeo! I'm glad you have a great vet, and a great store behind you. I hope he recovers quickly and your GCC stays healthy too.
