Hopefully I attached the picture correctly....he/she is a hahns macaw...hatched on Nov 3, 2013....I will know its sex later next week once the dna test is complete. I was considering a yellow shouldered amazon for awhile but got concerned that it may be too big to have around Rizo my sun conure... if it is a male we are going to name him Kenicke...hopefully some of you get the connection:54:

It will be shipped from Alberta which is a few provinces away so I am a bit nervous about that but from what I have read on here it sounds like it is not that big of a deal?

Now I need to look at getting a cage and of course more toys etc. I am not concerned about the noise or the nippiness because well hey I have a sun conure so beat that :30:

Anyways I am super excited because I have always wanted a macaw but those big beaks intimidate me so now at least I have a fighting chance lol...the way I see it is I am small but feisty so I believe between the Rizo and this new baby I will have met my match lol!

Hahaha I thought Rizo was a coincidence, but then you said Kenicke - I could probably recite the whole movie verbatim, songs included. :)

Your baby is adorable.

awwwww look at that little baby dinosaur!!! I love your Grease names, so cute! I would call the baby Kenicke even if it was a girl.

We were just talking about that....we never got Rizo dna sexed so we don't really know anyways....just thought it was funny....we have been laughing about it for months now when I first came up with the idea....we used to have two shelties one was named casa and the other was cola.....so when I was yelling at them outside all anyone would hear was casa cola (case of cola).....made my neighbors think I was nuts....lol!

Congrats, I went and saw a hahns today in a bird store, they are just too cute! I think I want one.

Congratulations on that lil one - that's just a picture you can't help but smile at :)

I can't find a Hahns anywhere right now. Supposedly it's not breeding season, so I'm not sure how yours just hatched, but lucky you!!

He's a cutie!

Thanks Everyone! I can't help but fall in love with the lil nekkid dinosaur lol....Maria I got very lucky finding him/her....he/she was the only egg in a double clutch (the first clutch had 3 eggs and were hatched at the beginning of October). The breeder said that she won't be having anymore until next fall!
Good luck finding a baby :) ! I'm in Canada so I had to find one in Canada because importing one is next to impossible but I know there are a lot more breeders in the US....

Congrats on your Hahn's. I have a little female five months. I brought her home at 7 weeks and finished feeding her. They are such characters. Smart, curious and full of trouble. I have found no nippiness thus far, but I know I read they tend to be later but it can be avoided with constant handling and socialization. And they talk up a storm, and not just mimic but word associate. My husband who has never been a bird person adores our Hahn's. I can 't wait to see your baby grow. Best of luck to you.

Maria. Had a really hard time as did others locating a Hahn's breeder. I am n NJ. Others looking were in other states. It appears that there are nit many that breed the and also not many in rescue. I guess the rescue part is a good thing. I ended up having to go the parrot store route but was extremely pleased. I went to Bird Paradise, in NJ. They had two babies and not inflated, was selling at the going rate and also included in the price DNA and disease testing as well as vaccinations and gave me a great deal on the cage and toys etc. and she came home with a care package. Just was not sure where you were located, whether it was within driving distance to Jersey or even in Jersey. The Hahn's are hard buggers to find. They had two that literally just came in and were gone in one day. I can tell you that they are worth the wait. We love our Hahn's so much. Good luck.

I love my Hahns. He's such a monkey and makes me laugh.

Hate to break this too you but the Mini-Macs often have more attitude (i.e. feistier) than the big macs!

Congrats for your new baby.

Thanks everyone....hopefully I will have new pics tomorrow....how long does it take until they are somewhat feathered? Also I have read not to get a cage with a playtop for a macaw....does anyone have any thoughts on this?

lol I know Birdman I am doing all the research I can right now and have read that multiple times....I am looking forward to the challenge...the problem here is that there aren't any ways to physically learn to be around the bigger birds...there isn't an active parrot club, bird rescues, or even any breeders around...I have experience with the small/medium size birds (senegal, conures, even had a rainbow lorie when I was younger) so the mini macaw fits in that size category....

I am pretty feisty too myself lol so I look forward to the challenge...maybe someday I would consider an older, bigger mac if there was someone to mentor me and if that day comes then this little one will have trained me well :)

I adore my Hahns macaw. So far Captain Jack has been very sweet. But as bird man said they have more attitude then the large macaws. However, the more I read I seem to notice constant handling everyday is recommend to keep them from getting aggressive. It is also recommended they get a good size cage. I know some nonbird people would laugh at seeing a little macaw in a cage that can make a good home for a parrot that is larger.

Well, Hahn's tend to be nippy with children more than adults... they don't like the super hyper activity.

They are actually very mellow if you work with them, and very playful. They make excellent trick birds, and they are generally content to be shoulder birds, and occasionally, like conures, inside the shirt birds with just their little heads sticking out...

They have sharp, pointy beaks that need to be occasionally just rounded off a little, or it could accidentally poke holes in flesh while stepping up.

They are feisty... all the mini-macs are. Full of playful piss and vinegar, and that is part of their charm, and they can be cuddle bugs...

Hi Rizosmom,

I noticed your post about Hahns macaws and I also am considering getting one (if I can find one as they seem very hard to find). I am happy you were able to find a Hahns macaw and I noticed you said you had it shipped from Alberta. Well, I am in Alberta and I am having trouble getting a hold of a breeder here. Would you happen to still have the breeders contact info? Also, any input, advice, or sharing any experiences with your Kenickie would be appreciated. Thanks!
