Odd question..

So I've got a 7 month old Green-Cheek Conure named Cricket and I'm trying to find more ways to get some protein in his diet. Our family rarely eats meat, so we never have much in the house. I was wondering if Purebites Chicken dog treats would work? All it is is 100% freeze-dried chicken. And let me tell you, Cricket eats absolutely anything so I have no concern over whether he'd eat it or not :p Would it be healthy? It's only freeze-dried chicken breast, and I figure it would be better than nothing.

What are your thoughts? He's currently on a diet of Harrison's and a mixture of fresh veggies daily (usually red bell pepper, yam, brocolli, sometimes carrot, apple, mango and banana, snap peas, and then sprouts when I have them). He also gets a bit of seed before bed (about a teaspoon)

It is not such a good idea to give a bird any kind of food intended for dogs or cats.

Here are a few suggestions to include protein in the diet of a bird:

You can purchase pre cooked meat items because they are such a good source: chicken (wings), salmon and water packed tuna.
Dairy in small amts. yogurt (low fat), cheese or cottage cheese (good training tools). Yes birds are lactose intolerant but that is mostly for milk. Well cooked eggs (organic since US has a recall on some), combinations of various grains, legumes (beans and brown rice) and nuts. A high quality pellet is suggested and you cannot find them at Petsmart. Harrisons is one of them. Please do not forget to get your bird to an avain vet for a baseline check up. Have fun!!

Good advice (as always) from SB. My little CAG absolutely loves scrambled eggs with a little bit of shell mixed in. Legumes are a good "meatless" way to get protein also.

You are better off giving your bird some of your own fresh cooked chicken when you make it for yourself. You don't need to worry too much about protein deficiency if your bird is already on a good pellet + fresh veg/fruit diet. I give my bird bits of cooked egg sometimes and even tofu. You should stay away from meat products that are made for cats and dogs as they have very lax regulations about what grade of meat can be used. Most commercial dog and cat foods contain things you would not want to know about....just google "rendering plant" and you will be horrified!

If your not squemish you can also add insects such as crickets, meal worms, night crawlers, wax worms ect to their diet, insects are very high in protien, with meal worms, especially the larger ones make sure you remove the head before feeding, also be sure that you use farm raised and not wild caught insects because of the pesticide concern......of course you'll have serve them dead so they don't crawl everywhere, I know its gross, but it is what it is........ :09:
