pumpkin seeds

Either way is fine. Don't forget the pumpkin too!! In the last issue of Bird talk Mag. there was a small article about cooking the pumpkin.

the pumpkin is in the oven! thanks, i tried a couple raw but the rest are in the oven too
 
My girl loves the pumpkin seeds that I buy at the health store and she LOVES cooked pumpkin with seeds. Try chem squash to, it is a favorite. ;)
 
I think I translated the Afrikaans word directly to English and got to a veggie that does not exist in the English language.

Here is a photo, they are much smaller than the normal pumpkin size, about the size of a tennis ball.

It looks a bit like what USA calls acorn squash. I is a winter squash here and I just baked one today along with the seeds. Ummmmm good.
 
you know i've never tried my conure with pumpkin seeds. We shall see when we go to the parrot shoppe next.
 
Viv You can get lots of pumpkins now. All you need to to is cut in half and bake (seeds separately). The meat of the pumpkin is very good for birds too.
 
How do you guys bake the pumpkin? Just cut it and put it in a baking sheet? or do you actually put some spices on it?
 
Oh it is fairly simple. The most difficult thing for me is cutting it in half. Then I scrape out the seeds to bake separately. I brush the inside of the pumpkin and toss the seeds in a very small amt. of olive oil. Then I lightly cover all with foil and bake at about 375 until soft. Last time I added some cinnamon which is good for birds and people.
 
Ok awsome. I will try some today. I got one small white pumpkin yesterday and my bird won't touch it raw. I will try to cook some and see if she would like that.

I cut all the types of pumpkin up in pieces and boil it till soft, you can even microwave it. When soft I mash it like you would make mash-potatoes and ad some water to it. (My reptiles get their water from their food) They all LOVE it! For difference I add cinnamon like Tannie Di mentioned but my iguana does not like cinnamon so I have to dish his out first. :rolleyes:

This is also the traditional Boere way of cooking veggies. We add butter, potato and sugar before we mash it. Even green beans, cauliflower, spinach and carrots are made this way. When I was a child I used to refuse to eat if it did not have the same consistency as porridge. :rolleyes:

I half the Gem squash and boil until soft. My parrot eats it inside the skin.

I have to say that she hardly shows any interest in the seeds, she only wants the flesh. :D

I cut the pumpkin in half, cleaned out seeds, covered with foil and baked at 350 for an hour, spooned out the pumpkin, mashed it, rolled it into balls, placed on cookie sheet, flash froze them, and bagged them. Now when i want some i just pull out a ball or two, and defrost!
