He always wants to sample whatever is on my plate or in my cup. Sometimes it's too hot! He kept getting mad at me when I would block him from getting at it (so he didn't burn himself), or he'd get around my hand and eat something too hot (which was apparently my fault, even though I tried to stop him). Sooooo I decided to see if I could teach him what "it's hot" means. I started saying "it's hot" or "be careful, it's hot" when the food was hot (but not burn-your-mouth hot, so he wouldn't burn himself). After a while he seemed like maybe he knew what it meant.
A couple days ago, I poured some hot water on my oatmeal, and I set it down on the table. Of course, Puck runs over to it, even though it's too hot for me to eat. I told him "Be careful, it's hot!" He was very careful and only took nibbles from around the edges, where it was cool enough, and made the little squeaky noise that he makes when food is hot. Success!! :-D
Next on the list: "It's cold!" He reacts similarly to cold stuff as he did to hot stuff. Last time he snuck a bite of my ice cream, then he got mad at me, and bit me for it! LOL.
