Proud new owner of Jardine

hi, i will post a pic soon of the newest member of our family.... REX

i have read up about them.... but would appreciate some advise on best food....

also......long story short, unfortunatly the first 4 months of Rex has not been pleasant and needs a lot of love and care... some serious TLC.

he is petrified of hands!.... my husband is covering his hand with a cloth to get him to sit on his shoulder.... any advise????

Hi! Welcome to the forum! I myself don't have a Jardine, but there are many members here who does and will soon give you advice on food etc.

How long have you had Rex? If it has only been for a short while he might need some more time to discover that not all hands are there to hurt or scare. Once he knows that he can trust you things will start to improve, but it will not happen overnight if he is that scared of hands. There is a lot of info on this forum regarding building trust, and many members who will give excellent advice on this. What have you tried so far?

Ooh, I love Jardine's. In fact, if I could have another bird right now they're one of the species I'd be considering .

If your bird is new to you, he probably just needs some time to settle in his new environment. Don't feel pressured (or pressure the bird) to do too much right at first. Talk to him nicely, don't stare with direct eye contact, see if he'll take food from your fingers (if not don't worry, might be too soon). Sit by him a distance away where he looks comfortable, and read a book, watch tv, etc. to get him used to your presence.

You mentioned Rex had a rough first 4 months of life... Is he still a juvenile? If so, he should come around to trust fairly quickly being a Poicephalus. If older, might take more time and patience.

Rex does not stop eating...... He eats then sleeps for a few minutes then continues eating...... Is this normal??
