I know this is a heavy topic but none of us is exempt from it. How does one set up care for a bird in the event of death? Sometimes we don't get a warning. I'm not trying to be morbid, but people die in accidents. How do you provide for a bird in case you don't make it home? I would never want Ollie to end up back where he was before I got him. I don't know anyone locally who I could designate as a caretaker. I've started him a journal with records of important things like food he likes, medical info, weight, vet info, nail clippings, Etc. But somebody would have to take him...

Fortunately my husband will take care of our kids in the event that the airplane I'm on right now doesn't make it. But you raise a good question. Would any of my extended family members take care of my budgies if both of us died? I know they wouldn't. There's an excellent local parrot rescue near me but they don't take budgies for some BS reason- just "real parrots"! I think they would if I made it worth their while with a $$$$ donation. I ought to make that arrangement while im still around. Otherwise I don't know what would happen to my babies.

I would rather make a large donation so my budgies can stay together in a rescue than have them split up and adopted out to people who wouldn't take care of them properly.

I don't know how to tell if a rescue is good or not. But someone would need to know to actually come and get him before his next breakfast. I hear horror stories of people passing on, and the animals being found days or weeks later.

The rescue near me is a beautiful newer building in a wooded setting. It's run by a woman who's father or grandfather started it and relies heavily on private donations. It's clean and the parrots are well taken cars of by the woman and a volunteer staff. I make donations every year. She only adopts out birds that are suitable for adoption. The rest live there for life.
I would say visit any rescues you are interested in and offer to volunteer or donate money. They need $$ more than anything else. Be as generous as you can.

This is a tough topic but needs some thought if you live alone and have any pets, not just birds. If live alone you need to have a friend, neighbor, family member, or clergy member check in on you periodically. You need to leave instructions for what to do with your bird(s).
If you are ill and aren't sure you're going to make it, alert someone about your situation and have them check on you.

I have a group of friends that check in every morning via group text. Just in case someone is incapacitated or passes during the last 24 Hrs. You forget to check in and the rest are on you and at your house etc

As to the FIDs, My son and oldest nephew are prepared to be their next forever homes.
