I potty-trained my Jenday Conure when I was 13. It isn't hard to do. However, it got to a point where he would ONLY go to the bathroom while he was on my finger. But I was at school from 7-3 and then had swim practice 3-6 so and he would hold it all day and it was just not good for him.

I don't recommend potty training unless you are home all day, every day.

Just train your birds to fly off/ signal to you when they need to poop - it you can get them to go to certain designated poop-places that is good enough.


Training to only "go" on command is not only unfair to the bird; you are risking his/her health so it can be considered cruelty to animals.

My boys have been taught a command phrase and that we will pick them up if they poop. So Yoda will poop in his cage if he sees me looking at him, because he knows I always wait until he poops to take him out. Trigger is pretty good about flying to his perch to poop, because he gets treats when he does. So they are mostly potty trained. It's not 100%, but it is certainly possible.

I potty trained my 4 conures in 24 hours. Yes it works but you HAVE to be consistent. They rarely have accidents at all...I get pooped on maybe once or twice in 6 months when someone is distracted or I wait too long to give them an opportunity to go potty but that's my fault! None of them hold it in too long or only go on command or any negative or unhealthy side effects because I used positive reinforcement only and half the time I still reward them for going potty on command or if they wait until I put them down..so on and so fourth. I trained them to go on command but also rewarded them they went anywhere that wasn't on my shoulder or on me so they learned they can go potty anywhere just not on me or other humans. I have 4 really smart birds and they had Ollie and an example who I potty trained 1st so that helped a lot because they saw him go in his cage, on the tree, sink and play stands so they knew it's good places to go but just not on Mommy!

Mango learned it within 2 days. But now she has retrained me. She used to just fly over to her cage and poop there, but she realized if she does it when I'm not looking there is no reward. So now she flies to me, makes here little poop noise to get my attention, and then I have to go and watch her poop.
