Today, going on deliveries and collecting stock, I popped into the wholesaler, where I purchase Mishka's pellets, toys etc. They do not keep birds there at all. When entering, I heard this screaming, I got such a fright, goosebumps appeared. I went towards where the screaming was coming from.
Low and behold, there was the most beautiful Macaw, I had ever laid my eyes on. He was screaming frantically, climbing up and down the bars. I have never in my entire life heard a bird scream like that. The young assistant, walking nearby, told him to shut up and be quiet. I was flabbergasted. The lady behind the counter said she can't take the screaming and yelling any longer. I ignored them and started talking to the Macaw.... It was amazing, THE BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD when the Macaw said "HELLO" and kept repeating it. They asked me what did I do to the bird. They both had never heard the bird talk before. Apparently the bird's owner passed away, the family asked the wholesaler to try sell the bird. From the time the bird was brought in, he screamed and yelled 24/7. I explained to them, how frightened and scared the bird was, being in a different environment, missing his owner, not knowing what has happened. Told them to give the bird, lots of love, attention and keep talking to him. Thank God they are feeding him the correct diet. They had a book, and list of all his likes and dislikes. I am not familiar with what the Macaw's diet is supposed to be. I continued talking to the bird, he was amazing, saying hello love you kiss kiss.........
I FELL IN LOVE ALL OVER AGAIN........He was really massive, compared to my AG Mishka, he was a giant.
They are selling the bird for R7500.00 (rands here in S.A.) If I had the space and a garden, today I would have become a guardian again !!!!!!!!:(

There's super Antoinette to the rescue again! ;)

Poor baby... I can't believe they didn't know how to give a bird attention. So sad!! I'm very glad you had such an opportunity to help a bird in need, and to teach those people the proper care of a macaw. Good for you!

I blame the shop owner, for the staff's ignorance, they have never had birds in the wholesale shop.
I spent about 30 minutes, talking to the bird and the staff. I just showed the bird love and attention, and they noticed it.
Pray the bird goes to a loving caring home........ ;)

What would the parrots in SA do with our you Ant?? I could not believe how beautiful (and big) they are when I saw a Macaw for the first time. If I ever win the lotto....

Great minds think alike ...... LoL :D
When paying for my pellets, I said I wish I had the space (and money) to buy the Macaw........ then said "If I ever won the Lotto"

Poor thing! I've already made my kids promise that they'll adopt and love our birds since they'll out live my husband and me.

Hey Lady Make them an offer you can afford. This bird is meant for you and Mishka will love it if introduced slowly. I am crossing my fingers that they will accept your offer.

I had a sleepless night, thinking of the Macaw............:11:

I would love to buy the Macaw, unfortunately, I do not have the space, we live in an apartment. Mishka's cage is enormous.
The Macaw would need a garden to spend time in, we don't have one.

BUT IF I EVER WON THE LOTTO............ :D

They now have doggie and cat daycare. Parrot Daycare??
We have something like that here in Toronto, it's called the parrot hotel, they accomodate daily, short or long term care when you need it. I use their services for grooming. They have a location but they will also come to your house if and when required.

Too bad they weren't in SA Antoinette, it sounds like you're dying over not being able to take in the Macaw! I would be upset too.

Boy do I know how that feels...:D

Well, someday...maybe someday... you'll be able to have another opportunity to take in a macaw in need. Maybe you'll be ready next time.

I am spoiling Mishka so much today, I guess just like any other day really LoL
BUT I can't stop thinking of the Macaw........:(
WE had such a great instant connection. I think only a birdie "lover" would understand it......

From what you described the parrot must have felt that instant connection too. He is most likely thinking about you too. Will you go back to see the bird??

I am actually going to see the bird tomorrow, I just can't help myself.
Mishka is my mate, my friend, my everything........ I love her more each day.
I just can't describe the connection between the Macaw and myself.
It was like a magical friendship ....... hard to explain :(

Poor thing! I've already made my kids promise that they'll adopt and love our birds since they'll out live my husband and me.

I've done the same thing, I get my son to help with all the food prep so he know's how to srpout beans etc. I think it something we need to consider as many of our parrots will out live us.

Antoniette, I believe everything happens for a reason and there's a reason you met. Even if you don't get to adopt him, your calming presence may help make his transition to a new home much more settling and may help him find a new owner a lot quicker than if he was stressed out & screaming all day.

Mabye you can go on TV and Radio and the Internet and find a good guardian for the bird. You will be Auntie Antionette.

Went back to the wholesaler this morning, the poor Macaw was still there.
He got excited when he spotted me, and started saying hello, in about 4 different voices and tones. I spoke to the owner, he has a potential buyer, they will know later today. He mentioned that he will go to the buyer's home, and check whether he has the correct cage, space and environment that the bird requires. I felt sad, but happy in another way. At least I know he will be taken proper care of and loved.
The staff know Mishka by name, since birth LoL.
I asked what is the Macaw's name ......... assistant smiled and said Mishko...... I nearly fainted, how coincidental is that..........
KNOW I KNOW WHY WE HAD AN INSTANT MAGICAL CONNECTION
I will be given the new owner's contact details, to see how "Mishko" is doing.
