Peach faced lovebird Basil
Now that Basil is spending more time out of his cage, I have become quite aware of his poops (because they are on me or on the floor, rather than on the newspaper in his cage).

What is "normal" for lovebirds? I've noticed that some poops are really dry and easy to clean up while others (like the one that just landed on my hand and fortunately not the keyboard) are wetter and looser. Basil eats Harrison's pellets, some broccoli (fussy bird doesn't like his fruit and veggies) and millet for treats. Should I be concerned?

I had lovebirds for many years... and it's been a while since then. But I believe that a bird's "poop" also contains the urine. So a dropping that contains more urine than actual poop, will be looser. If it's a strange color, then I'd be concerned.

If someone would be kind enought to either post or message me a step by step of how to post a pic with a post, I'd post some good pics of what various types of presentations look like.....

I've tried & either get an over size limit notice or it wants an internet upload location. I don't plan on putting them in any photo site, so it's either figure out how to load them or y'all will just have to do without..... :)

Hi, I second what LoryLover says about poop containing urea. Yes it does.
When I got my lovie the breeder was training him to poop on comand by tapping him on the back and saying poop. I did not bother to carry on the training. (apparantly it can be done). try to search bird toilet training on line or other members may be able to help. I also had a hard time getting any of my lovies to eat veg of fruit but they loved frozen peas once thawed.

I've never heard of anyone training a parrot to go potty on command by tapping them on the back... what's the breeder trying to do, scare the **** out of them, literally????

Weco, you need an image editing software. There are a bunch of free ones online, and some places that you upload your images to may automatically resize them, will upload them at a certain size, or may even give the option of different sizes from the original image down to a thumbnail sized image. If you don't want to use any of those you can use a program such as Paint.net, Microsoft Photo Gallery, GIMP, Irfanview, etc. You will need to resize your images to 800x600 pixels or smaller. (for best viewing on a forum)

cdnbirdlover, a birds droppings can vary depending on what they've eaten, when they've had to drink, their stress levels and their health. Birds have a fast metabolism, so need to eat food frequently throughout the day. If they haven't had much to eat but have had quite a bit to drink there may be more urine than droppings. Also, when a bird becomes stressed, their droppings may become more wet and loose. As long as everything, for the most part, appears normal, you shouldn't need to be concerned - but it does help to pay attention to droppings, because they can sometimes be used to find out when a bird is sick.
