Why is it that duke will be sitting on top of the cage for a good hour, hour and a half and as soon as i pick duke up duke will poop most of the time on the ground, sometimes my arm...its pretty gross, its like he holds it till he gets picked up?....any advice, recommendations?

Some birds dislike doing their business in or on the cage.
My advice, purchase a baby's potty. When picking Duke up, place him on the potty, and say poopie. Each and every time when picking him up. It may take a while for him to latch on, just preserver.
When he does poopie in the potty, praise him endlessly.

Lol, I just keep a paper towel nearby. As soon as I see the poop squat, under the tail it goes. I had thought I could train my Nanday to tell me when she had to poop, but that totally backfired. Instead I got a bird that goes and then announces brightly, "Poop!" Yes, I saw it already! She also thinks I like it so I have to be careful or she will try to poop on purpose for my praise. That stopped me from trying to potty train the rest of the birds. Sometimes she will strain to make one trying to please me.

I'm never angry at any animal for pooping. It's just something we all have to do. But, I haven't tried praising her for it in years as soon as I realized she was doing it on purpose. But, she remembers my trying to potty train her (from nearly 12 years ago) and still tries to please me with it. Sometimes I just have to look at her and she will stretch for me and then poop and make a big production of it.

So just be careful in your potty training. You don't want your fids straining to poop for you thinking it will please you. They need to know that pooping in the right place is what pleases you, not the act itself. I messed up.

I heard an African Grey tell it's owner it had to make a poop and I figured I could do that, too. Well, I didn't do it right.

My zon may be somewhat potty trained though. He hasn't pooped on me yet. He seems to hold it until I put him down or back in his cage.

But, conure poop is pretty easy to catch in the paper towel so that is what I do. I also wear crummy clothes when I have them out. She can chew little holes in my icky shirts or accidentally poop on me and it's all good. I don't throw out clothes until there's nothing left, lol! My ex bf used to complain how I was dressed when he came home from work. I said yes, but look at what I do when I get home. I clean stalls and then get pooped on by birds! I also do all the maintenance on my truck, motorcycle and tractors. And I am remodeling this old house. Old clothes are a necessity with my lifestyle.
