Today has been terrible.

This morning started out great, I slept in, even talked to some family on the phone. But a few hours after I fed the birds I heard a terrifying death scream coming from my bird room, clearly from a GCC. I ran to investigate, sure I would find a mass of blood and feathers, but there was nothing. But I just had a bad feeling, and kept going in to check. A few hours later I noticed Buddy starting to droop. I thought for sure it was all in my head until I noticed his mate, Delta, all fluffed up about an hour after that. I tried to calm down, because I have paranoia about these things. I caught them and gave them a once over; eyes, nares, vents all looked good, keels felt good, they both had food in their crops and both put up a fight, good droppings... I decided I was freaking out for no reason. I came back an hour later and saw two birds with eyes closed that did not open when I entered the room.

I called 18 vet clinics. Finally I got an appointment for 8:30 pm, but it was only 4:30 at the time. I watched them deteriorate. I prayed. I ways sure they would be dead by the time they got to the vet. At one point I thought Delta WAS dead. By the time we got to the vet Buddy was laying on his side barely breathing. We got in the exam room. It was FREEZING and I asked for a heat lamp. They brought one, but then they took them to put them in a brooder and give oxygen, and the vet conduced his exam in another room after they had been in the brooder for a while, so he could keep me warm while he examined them.

All the drive over I had been on the phone with my mentor, running through every possibility, every change, every indicator. All but two of my birds live in that room, but all he other birds were fine!

I discussed my specific concerns with the vet and he agreed with my mentor; almost certainly heavy metal poisoning from their new cage. New cage syndrome my mentor called it. I have never heard of it before! I had disinfected it, but not treated it with vinegar. Oops.

We discussed my options. Basically for more info I needed $$$$ blood work, which would have to be sent to the mainland. And when the results came back as to Which metal? The clinic didn't have the drugs. They wanted to keep them overnight so they could stay in the brooder. I said my brooder was set up. They said they needed fluids every four hours, I said I can do that. They said they might need to be crop tubed, I said been there done that. They said what about quarantine? I said they told me it surely wasn't viral or bacterial, so I wanted my babies home! They gave subcutaneous fluids and sugar water by mouth, and sent me home. Half way to my car the vet came running out. He had gone back into a text book and found instructions on using Metamucil to help clear them out. He told me how to do it.

I got home, and my birds who could barely move upon arriving at the vet had perked up quite a bit. Heavy metal I guess attacks the kidney and they were extremely dehydrated. The fluids had done wonders. Buddy, who has never been completely tame, climbed out of the carrier and tried to escape, but he took fluids and gave me a feeding response! That is amazing because he was not. Hand raised at all! Delta practically attacked me to get at the syringe when she saw it, and immediately climbed up onto my shoulder!

The vet said if they are still alive by morning to start feeding formula until they are eating on their own. Once they got into the brooder Delta went right for the food and started to eat! Buddy ran around in the shavings like "ooohhh, fluffy floor!"

This afternoon I thought I had two dead birds, and was terrified for the rest of my flock. Right now (almost 1am here in hawaii) I have two sick birds who just might pull through, and a very low chance that my other birds are in danger. I'm so relieved!

BUT LESSON LEARNED

EVEN CAGES MANUFACTURED BY SAFE COMPANIES CAN PICK UP TOXINS DURING SHIPPING AND SHOULD BE BOTH DISINFECTED AND WASHED WITH VINEGAR.

Oh my gosh, (mrs) Dani, I'm hoping for the best for you in the next week and for the morning. That must've been exhausting and overwhelming, while they're recovering, I'm ecstatic that they've perked up since then.

Thank you for sharing this as soon as you could, I've never heard of parrots being poisoned from their cages (from well established companies). I think it's a great lesson for all of us to up-the-ante with our cleaning habits and routine.

please keep us updated on the situation, and rest while you can :)

Dani, how absolutely horrifying! Thank goodness you know your birds so well and reacted quickly. I'm really sorry you and your birds had such a traumatic experience. Hugs for you and hopes for a full recovery for your babies. Please keep us updated.

Wow how frightening! I am so glad they are doing better, please keep us posted. Is this a powder-coated cage?

Oh Dani I'm sorry you had yet another traumatic event happen. You don't need all this! I'm so glad to hear they're alive, and fingers crossed that they'll pull through. You are such a good bird caretaker too.

I wash my cages with Dawn soap, water and vinegar. I also have F10 spray on hand. What does vinegar do to cut down on metal toxicity? I've just always used it for basic cleaning. I use white distilled vinegar.

Jeez Louise that's horrific!!!!

I had used f10 on the cage after soap and water, but not vinegar. I'm not sure what it does but you always hear that you are supposed to sue it on aviary wire to remove zinc.

Update, miraculously Delta is up and about, seeming about 80% back to normal. Buddy is really struggling but he is eating the watermelon I gave him and I was able to get 3ml of formula down him as well. I really want to get some Metamucil and cranberry juice in him to clean him out but I currently have five kids at my house and no way to transport them. I'm going to do another feeding every two hours. At this point he has to take breaks, eyes closed, head down, every few bites a of food but he has an appetite! That's a good sign! He can't eat out of a raised dish since he can't hold his head up very far right now, so I hurried the dish down into the shavings, which means very 30 minutes or so I have to go back in and clean out the dish.

I am hopeful, but not confident yet.

Did I mention this is coming on the heels of the Eckie adoption while I'm still adjusting to them, and on the week of the 4th, which means I'm babysitting 2 extra kids (for a total of 5), 22 birds, 3 dogs, 7 adult rabbits and 3 newborn kits, a cat, and a guinea pig, many of which are actually staying with me, on top of my own flock of 35, dog, cat, and fish tank? When I apologized to the vet tech for my frazzled state she said "oh I have a rescue conure at home, I know exactly how you feel." I wanted to scream at her, but since I knew she was just trying to be sweet I refrained :p

Yikes hang in there....

My God! How do you do it? You must be busy all day long! When does your day start? I'm out of bed by at least 5:30 am with 7 birds but I also have a diabetic dog who needs insulin and another dog dying of cancer so I'm well busy. A lot of the time I spend cleaning and giving insulin shots and giving medications for the dog with cancer. My two conures need a ton of attention as well.

Maybe the vet tech just didn't know what to say? Or either that she's just simple minded :p

Lol she just didn't know what was going on, I just said "sorry, I've got a lot going on right now, I know I must look like a crazy person" and she said she understood lol.

My day starts at 4:35 am becaus I lift weights with my husband before he goes to his morning meeting, before he goes to PT :p.

Lift weights? Girl, I give you a lot of credit. I've never been much of a morning person but now with the birds I don't have much of a choice, cleaning cages while getting caffeinated up is what I do lol

Delta continues to improve, Buddy seems slightly better but not much. I suspect that his damage may be permanent.

I'm glad to hear good news about Delta. Prayers that Buddy will also continue to improve and that he doesn't suffer any permanent damage.

Personally... I go to the gym after I'm fully awake, and that is only AFTER caffeine lol!

It's the only time we both can get there, and it's one of the things he always wanted out of marriage; to work out with his wife. For the record I don't LOOK like I lift, or like I eat right, but I do. Lol.

No change in either bird from the last update. More news in the morning. Hawaii is 5 hours earlier than central time.

Praying for you.

Is there any recourse with the cage company? Reimbursement for vet bills? (I know at this time this is the last thing on your mind...)

Oh SilverSage I've just woken up to this this morning - I'm hoping and praying you've had a smooth night, and that both conures continue to improve. Thinking of you x
