HI Fellow Parrot Lovers! Baby Green Wing Macaw, Loving Departed Yellow-naped Amazon "Poe"
Hello Everyone,

Please Welcome Our New Baby Greenwing, Hatched March 21st 2014

We have about 8 weeks till we can take him/her home
( guess how many miles I will be driving once a week over the next 8 weeks )

For those that didn't get any text from the other thread, Going to M and D bird farm was a GREAT experience:

When you walk in to see a bird they immediately take you to the washroom and make everyone scrub their hands with soap, then they make you use a hand sanitizer, THEN they make you put on a freshly cleaned "hospital" gown

This really impressed me, at least they are "trying" to control contamination
No one is allowed inside the nursery AND the nursery is on a separate HVAC and ventilation system to keep air from other areas getting into the nursery

Another thing that impressed me were the employees or should I say their job classifications, employees in charge of feeding just do feeding, other employees in charge of cleaning only do cleaning, I'm sure that goes a long way to help keep the birds food as clean as possible

Anyway, On with the PICS !!!

Oh she does look incredibly happy! Of course, who wouldn't be after getting to snuggle with such a darling baby! :p

Congrats on finding your new baby. Can't wait to see more pictures as he /she grows.

Beautiful but I am not sure who looks happier, her or the bird:D. Those pics look like the bird is already in love:)

Oh Joe, I'm sitting here with tissues. Seeing Rissa's face is making my eyes sweat something fierce. Insta-love! ;)

What a super precious, beautiful baby you have all found! :D

I am so very happy for all of you!!! :)

Now tell me if I'm wrong, but you must be BEYOND tired. When's the last time you slept? :54:

As you go visit "Precious" regularly, you will already develop a bond, and it will make the transition so much easier once you bring him/her home. :D

MANY MANY CONGRATS...and hugs!! XXX

Congratulations, Joe! You and your daughter both seem so much more happy and at ease with this baby! And that is quite a beautiful baby greenwing! Wow! Please make sure to keep the pics coming with each visit!

*GASP*
Super cute and super exciting!!!!! So happy for you joe!! I love the picture with Rissa cuddling her and she's got her eyes closed [emoji173]️

Have you all come up with a name yet?

Congrats on the new birdy. I guess we all have different points we would look for with a breeder, but most importantly, the bird you are bringing home, you are happy with:) I am sure this beautiful baby will be in your family for a very, very long time. And your daughter does look very happy. Will this be more her bird, or a family bird?

Congratulations, Joe! I'm so happy for you & your family! Your baby is BEAUTIFUL! :)

Oh Joe, I am so thrilled for you all!!! What an absolutely beautiful baby and it sounds like this breeder is one you can trust and depend on. Rissa looks so incredibly happy, and so does that baby in her loving arms:)
I just finished your other thread and am so glad that this has turned out this way for you!!!!
So are you going to have to take a leave of absence from work so you can be at the breeders everyday until you can bring your baby home?
Thank you so much for the wonderful news, I am ecstatic for you!!!!!

Congrats on your new family member! It does look like a very nice facility, I too am wondering how they handle fledgling time.

The look on your daughter's face is absolutely priceless!

She just found her new best friend for life...

That's so amazing! I'm so happy for you, Joe, especially after reading and following your previous thread. I can't wait to watch this adorable baby grow up with love in your home, it gives me warm fuzzies!

Yay!!! I LOVE how happy Rissa looks! :D

I think you made a good choice Joe. M&D looks and sounds like a good place. The biosecurity measures are impressive, and it's really unheard of for most places.

IM SO HAPPY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!! :red1::07:

Thanks Dustbunny, Alison,

The reason I say that is last year in September my daughter was in the hospital for 17 days, she was normal one day and then the next day she started having unexplained seizures, Long story short she hurt herself (must've caused slight brain swelling) from a very slight fall, The hospital was completely useless.... Could not figure it out.... lesson learned: if your local hospital can't figure it out within two or three days, transfer to a major or university hospital in the big city

As if all that isn't bad enough my son Joe who was 17 at the time stayed at the hospital 24 hours a day, slept in a cot next to his sister for 17 days, my 16-year-old son Justin stayed home by himself (he goes to virtual charter school anyway) taking care of the animals, doing our laundry, food shopping, and everything else, I slept at the hospital every night and would run to work in the morning to give out the work orders and get the crew started and check on my Amazon, the bird seemed exactly the same as always, I held him everyday, and my son kept him on his shoulder
(I am a single parent)

My daughter was completely conscious, but could not speak or move or communicate, within 24 hours I started to notice that her eyelids could move, I said "Rissa blink your eyes if you hear me" well of course she blinked her eyes, within 10 min. I learned how to ask her questions to figure out what she wanted, the last question I always asked her was the opposite response and she will blink her eyes twice that's how I knew that I was really communicating with her, now here's the scary part none of the doctors or nurses believed me, it took fighting with all of them, I would say "Rissa blink once if you're thirsty" and she would blink once, then I would say "Rissa blink once if you're not thirsty" and of course she would not blink

I felt like we were in a complete insane loony bin, now imagine the shift change every few hours and having same fight with everyone, knowing what your daughter needs or wants, I should have sued them...

Finally with some unnecessary medication that was the wrong stuff, my daughter was able to come home, on the day she came home the Amazon unexpectedly died for no obvious reason, The bird's name was "Poe" like the poet Edgar Allen Poe, who died on October 7th just like the bird

Sorry to go on about it, it was the worst thing that ever happened in my life, SO when she came out of the bird farm she had the MOST BEAMING, Glued to your Face for hours SMILE I have seen in a Very Long Time
(It gave me a lot of JOY)

Oh and Alison, you are right, the bird actually spoke to Rissa (you can just barely hear it in the YouTube video between 25 and 30 seconds)
I went back and listened to it with the volume cranked up and Rissa is "cooing" and talking to the Bird the whole time

Oh Joe, I'm sitting here with tissues. Seeing Rissa's face is making my eyes sweat something fierce. Insta-love!

Aww, Thanks Wendy, they both did seem to be under each other spell !!
That is our actual bird pasted into the 2 pictures of the kids outside
( I cut the bird from Rissa's lap in Photoshop LOL)

Every time Rissa sees the Video or a picture she says "That's our bird, I want to be with him, I love that bird" With the biggest SMILE

It is making me VERY Happy!!

I am planning weekly trips down there (270 miles Round Trip  )
I know you are right, definitely should help with the bonding process and transitioning home

And yes Wendy, nothing gets past you :D !! Based on the Post Time and me being still online this morning I stayed up all night getting the post and video done LOL then I went to sleep on the sofa for 3 hours :)

Don't Forget You are the God Mother !!! LOL Wait till you see the stand I make for him/her in the car (for family visits)

Congratulations, Joe! You and your daughter both seem so much more happy and at ease with this baby! And that is quite a beautiful baby greenwing! Wow! Please make sure to keep the pics coming with each visit!

Thanks Stephen,

Of course at this age it's a crapshoot what the birds personality will be like
BUT, at least I don't have to worry about the bird learning that it's okay to do whatever he/she wants, completely uncontrolled OR worrying as much about injury or sickness

I guess this way is more like an arranged marriage LOL, we all have each other for better or worst for the rest of our lives!!

I will make sure to keep the pictures coming, my boys didn't even get to hold the baby and I only held the baby for about 2 min. one reason was I hadn't decided to buy the baby yet, the other reason is the baby had just eaten about an hour ago and the crop was about three quarters full

SO the Boys will have pictures in our very next visit !!
This week I am going to drive down there (on a weekday :D)

Then we stood in the store discussing it for about a half-hour and decided to go for it!! my boys shoveled snow all winter and contributed about $800, my daughter is going to use money from her online store (4Rissa) to help pay off the $1000 balance we will be paying in the next eight weeks, I only paid for the cage LOL (yeah right)

*GASP*
Super cute and super exciting!!!!! So happy for you joe!! I love the picture with Rissa cuddling her and she's got her eyes closed [emoji173]️

Have you all come up with a name yet?

Thank You So Much Shirre, Yes, I watched the video on a very large TV and they are so having a GREAT cuddle time, as a matter of fact I don't think my daughter has ever quite cuddled and talked to a bird the way she was with this bird, she just seemed completely melted the bird made her into Butter LOL

Well, the owner of the store Eric, wants me to do a DNA through their store and I don't believe in "wasting" money, they want $40 LOL
Everyone here knows can get it done for about half that at the most
So for me it's a matter of principle, I think it's really bugging him because he's brought it up to me three times already (I think he wants to know for his own record keeping, or maybe the $40 helps cover some other cost)

In any case I don't like feeling taken advantage of and $40 is just too much

They also like you to buy their "starter kit" ($1,207) which is very nice and includes a top-of-the-line A & E Cage, but it literally cost double what I could get all the stuff for, when I told him how much I paid for the cage I don't think he believed me LOL

So anyway the point is UNFORTUNATELY we won't be able to name the bird until I get him/her DNA'ed (assuming we were going to pick a typical male-female type name)

I would also like to see if he changes his mind and throws the test strip in with all the others being that he pays for the service based on the large number of tests he has done and one more costs him virtually nothing LOL

Thanks April, Like I said, picking one this young just means for better or worst we will be with, and Love each other to the BEST of our ability for the rest of my life and most likely my children's lives also!!

My son Joe has promised me to stand by his sister and make sure that she can handle it, he was very good with my Amazon Poe, as a matter of fact in some ways the relationship they shared was even closer than my relationship with Poe, I have a lot of confidence in his ability to learn to handle this Bird

To answer your question, this baby will be completely socialized, spending quality time EVERY day with every one of us, we actually use a timer to remind us that it is the next person's turn, I do most of the training with my son Joe independently teaching the birds some tricks, after I finally taught my Amazon to hang upside down from my hand and take a treat out of my other hand my son Joe taught the bird to loop around and go upside down on a handheld perch, the bird learned that Joe would keep his hand on the birds back while he looped around the perch, I was very proud of the work Joe did with the Amazon (remember the Amazon was with my father for many many years and it took a long time to get the bird to allow us to do things like this)

Anyway, we are all completely psyched and counting down the days LOL
