hello, i would like to volunteer at a parrot or bird rescue. however i cant find any nearby me. i live on long island NY. do you know of any rescues on Long Island or in the city that accept volonteers? i understand that at rescues the birds arent all friendly and that its more work than fun, but i want to help and be around birds. even if all i do is clean cages or mop, i'll be happy. Even any breeders that wouldnt mind a helping hand. thank you :)

Here are some in NY. And, yes, be prepared to be cleaning poop! If you are lucky, you can also chop food. But, you also get to interact with an array of birds, which is the best part.

thank you! I'll have to check those out :)

I WISH you were here in Florida!!! We NEED more volunteers! If you haven't found a place to volunteer and still want to help out, we can definitely use you. Obviously it would not be hands on since you are in NY.... there are lots of ways to help out from home. I live near the rescue but do not get to visit as much as I like. Most of the volunteer work I do for them is from home. I write blogs, post photos, spread awareness in the community, help with administrative tasks. There is always so much to do.

I was thinking about moving to FL. Where is this bird rescue, Cheeky?

We are located in Historic Melbourne Beach FL, 2 blocks from the Indian River and 4 blocks from the ocean....talk about Birds in paradise!

Melbourne Beach is located on barrier Island just south of Melbourne FL. We are on the east coast of Florida, about 30 minutes south of Cape Canaveral, about an hour from Orlando and 3 hours north of Miami. It's not the most exciting part of Florida if you want nightlife and a fast paced life. It IS however a great place to LIVE. Crime rates are lower, schools are better and people are nicer in Brevard County!

Noticed you're in Seattle, better get used to SUNSHINE!!!! It is sunny here over 300 days a year! In fact a full day of clouds and rain is pretty rare. Yes we do get rain, almost daily in the summer on the mainland. It usually lasts for no more than 20 minutes and poof....the sun is out again. Winters are fairly dry and mild. My county is just south of the Subtropical climate zone line so no snow, no ice, maybe a bit of frost every couple of years but never a hard freeze. If you live on a barrier island, no mosquitoes...in fact very few flying insects at all...except love bugs twice a year. Ok there might be a few mosquitoes, but I don't really need screens on anything.
Just imagine....your Parrots can be outside in the SUNSHINE everyday! Mine take a bath alfresco with the mister from the hose every morning when I water my plants. Can't do that in Seattle, can you:09:

JadeC , what part of Florida are you thinking about. We moved here 5 years ago from Massachusetts, and I wished we had moved here years ago I love it here:) Seattle is beautiful but I need sunshine:)

Haha you're funny!!! It's gorgeous in Seattle, actually! All that rains really pays off with the plants :p I used to live in Key West, and my family live in Miami and Orlando, but I've only visited a few times. I was in California a few years ago and I LOVED it, but my mom wants me to move to FL and be with the family. I used to take my Quaker everywhere when I lived in Key West!!!!! I love the easy life-style out that way and I do miss it. I'm in college going to pre-vet school, but I'm not into partying or the whole night-life scene, so that sounds like a good area for me. Hah Thanks for the heads up!! Here's a pic of Seattle on a good day, which is like every day in the summer!!

I want to find a college there that is good for pre-vet or just a good college for science degrees. I want to move to CA, but my mom wants me to move out to FL instead!! Hah I'd love to be near my family!

Any parrot volunteer places in Seattle? I know there is a cockatoo rescue and sanctuary near here, but I don't know.
