i just noticed on his back claw its cut pretty bad.im going to take him to the vet tomorrow.

we have a metal chair in the living room with jagged edges we think might have done this.

but is there anything i should do?im just worried and thought i could come here for some advice. dont have a bid budget and was wondering how much it will cost and also if anyone knows how the vet will handle this situation? i dont think its big enough for stiches i hope its not man im sooo worried about him.

what should i do?

If it's not bleeding, he should be OK... If it's bleeding, you need to stop it by putting some cornflower on the wound...

I don't think you'll need to take him to the vet, but by all means do, if it'll make you feel more confident.

man thank you for the quick reply i really appreciate that.its not bleeding anymore i know the vets are expensive so i would like to avoid it but the cut just looks dirty.should i try to clean it he likes to take showers with me.

oh ya and Merry Christmas everyone.

Yes, please clean the wound..

I've had several people with badly cut and dirty wounds, but the doctor always sent us back home to clean the wounds before he would do anything about it...

Watch for infection... Redness around it, and also it might be getting hot...

A long bath, where he can soak his feet, would be perfect.

I think cleaning the wound would be a good idea. Peroxide isn't recommended in first aid anymore, because it also kills healthy cells (and therefore slows down healing), but for the initial cleaning I would think it'd be okay, as long as it's not used continuously. I am just suggesting peroxide because I think it would go better than using alcohol to clean the wound (sting!). Soap and water are also just fine for cleaning wounds (doesn't have to be antibacterial).

Keep an eye out for infection, and if anything arises, then take your bird to the vet. Taking it anyway won't be a bad idea (I don't know how bad the cut is), and it's better safe than sorry if you're not sure. You will probably have the cost for the visit, and I would guess that they would instruct you on how to clean the wound, and maybe prescribe some antibiotics in case of infection (personally I wouldn't give antibiotics unless I saw signs of infection, since they are hard on the system, but that's just my opinion). If I am not mistaken, they only stitch relatively fresh wounds, so if it's not bleeding anymore, and you don't get in until tomorrow, I doubt they'd do it.

Best of luck to both of you. :)

bathe it in warm salty water and then just rinse it, if its not red i wouldn't be too worried

my lil buddy

Everyone else has already said everything I'd say, just clean the wound with some mild wound cleaner and just keep an eye out for bleeding and infection.

Your guy is beautiful, it's lovely to see him cuddling up to you :)

i used to really panic about Mylah and our vet said to us if you panic they panic... so now i don't panic lol basically with cuts and stuff its the same as us humans keep it clean and make sure it doesn't get infected, mylah gets really stressed when shes molting and she was scratching at her face and head and she had a little cut we just bathed it and shes fine now,

yesterday i just took a shower with him put him on the floor he is cool with it for about 10seconds then wants back up on the shower rail (he like to run in and run out) so i did that probably 5 times in just soapy water.should i like put a towel over him and force clean it? i dont want to do anything to stress him out thats why im even afraid to drive up the street with him.

he has been in mine our my fathers room.he has just been resting other then that he acts like nothings happened. he will jump right on my shoulder if i let him hes still being talky. the thing is were not positive the chair did this. we see 2 drops of blood where the chair WAS (threw out the chair out as soon as we saw the blood) but i dont know what could have done this.thats the only blood seen there is a little outside my door cause he comes there to try and get in. other then that we have 2 cats but they dont dare mess with bird. and bird can let off a screech that would scatter the cats in a heartbeat if needed.but they dont try anything with him well never have.

another note is we havent seen him bend it could be cause its cut bt i dont see how it could have been broken awe man i dont even like saying that

well thats about it so sorry for all the writing i didnt even expect that i started and couldnt stop i hope that doesnt scare you guys off im really worried about my buddy.

That is a pretty deep looking cut and the joint looks pretty swollen as well. If you can, you may want to take him to the vet just so he can get put on appropriate antibiotics. I've just heard some horror stories of birds dying from simple infections and it makes me leery. And while it doesn't look like a cat scratch, if it happens to be that, he will definitely need a round of antibiotics. In the mean time, make sure you're not only keeping his toe clean, but you are going to have to be super meticulous about cleaning his cage, you don't want any food or poop getting in there and making things worse. Good luck with him and try not to worry too much, it's only going to upset him worse.

That looks pretty bad. I'd get him to the vet ASAP. There is some inflammation going on, which suggests an infection. With how messy birds can be, I think it may need cleaning more than once a day, plus possible antibiotics. I'm not a huge fan of them, but it's risky not to. Make sure you give him a course of probiotic supplements if the vet gives him antibiotics. Birds are masters at masking illness, so you probably won't see symptoms until it gets really bad.

The first picture of you two together is adorable!

You really shouldn't be looking for veterinary advice on a forum... If you're worried, you need to take him to a vet... Avian, that is...

it looks infected bathe it with saline or salty water not soap and make sure you take him to the vet its very swolen

If anyone has a medical issue with a bird this forum is not a cheap fix. Your bird needs to have the foot examined by an avian vet asap. He could be without a foot and that is not good. The wound looks nasty as people have said.

thanks again everybody! i will be hanging out in these forums i like the DIY stuff i want to try to make him some cool stuff.

So glad he got checked out and everything looks good. The cast should definitely help to keep it clean so that's a good thing for sure. Sounds like you have a great vet and that is a pretty awesome price for everything they did. Glad you're going to stick around :)

Great news and a great price... You certainly have a great vet... Thanks for the update.
