Is that what he is a yellow sided Greencheek ?

yes definitely yellow sided GCC beautiful bird you have there :)

Maybe he is fancy like the ketchup packets?

"Fancy" is just a term that some petstores use to describe "abnormal" colored birds - i.e. birds that are not wild type/normal color.

Fancy is not in fact a name of a mutation.... Truth in fact, "yellowside" isn't even a correct terminology for a mutation, but rather a nickname given to a mutation to describe it's appearance. The true terminology is an opaline mutation. It is the same exact mutation seen in cockatiels that is known as the "Pearl" mutation, although the opaline gene has different effects to a birds body depending on the species.

Now, besides the fact that green cheek conures have different subspecies, chances are, the majority of them, if not all, in the USA may be hybrids. This doesn't necessarily mean they are hybrids with other species of conures, simply hybrids within their own species due to the variety of subspecies that they have and people failed to keep the subspecies separate.

Monica I'd like to say we have an opaline at the rescue and it looks nothing like the yellow sided... So I would like to say both are a little different. The opaline has little to no red on the chest and more of a silver look in my expirences at least.

Got pics?

Like I mentioned, there are different subspecies of green cheek conures.... and "we've" probably hybridized them so much that there can be some variances to the mutations that pop up.

green cheeked

There's also two "types" of opalines from what I've noticed... the ones with quite a bit yellow, and the ones with a lot of red. It's the same mutation, but breeders have been working on some having more red coloration.

A high red "pineapple" (aka cinnamon opaline)

And, if I have the mutation correct, a turquoise opaline with a crimson bellied conure

Sadly I didn't take pictures of them up at the resue I will have to see about getting them.

I do understand the large amount of hybridization happening in green checks but I do believe many different places will tell you a different name for the hybrid, so yellow sided being called a opaline could be one source and another could just say yellow sided is the true name... It's so hard with the varying opinions on the birds to get a true answer to all these man made models.

If we are talking mutations alone, then yellowsided is the same as opaline... like a Blue Throated Macaw is the same as a Caninde Macaw.... but then, there is the subspecies known as a "Yellowside"... and not very many people are familiar with it... although, I think it's more commonly known as Sordid or Sordida?

(as if that's not confusing enough!)

Regardless, if you ever get the photos, that would be great!
