The petco that opened in my town is a super center and has macaws, greys, eclectus, pionus, dusky conures, sun conures, green cheeks, and parakeets. i've never seen a petco sell this many kinds of parrots.
kinda cool, but i am still pretty upset.
out of 300 people wanting my conures, i found maybe three that were responsible enough. everybody wanted breeders, talkers, hand tame, nothing they had to work with etc..
but at petco anybody can buy a bird.. theres no weeding out impulse buyers.
and the worst part is, in november everybody in alaska gets $800-$1200 for free..
so now all of the dumb dumbs from the bush will come out from hiding and partake in impulsive buying..

i'm positive that my city will start seeing tons of mistreated aggressive problematic parrots on craigslist.
and who will help them? people like me. sad..

one lady looking at conures, ironically was someone i refused to sell to because she had six cats, four pitbull she breeds, and a lot of young kids..
she didnt realize she was talking to my mom and she said "I'm looking for a breeding pair of conures so I can throw a certain someone jerk breeder out of business" she was talking about me. birds at petco arent dna sexed and even if they were they are probably brother and sister.. and will take 1-3 years to breed! either way i wish her the best of luck.

That is sad. It's a shame those birds have to suffer because of poor owners. And what kind of sick degenerate gets birds to settle a personal vendetta? Hope the birds bite the fire out of that woman. I have to admit, all 3 of my budgies came from Petsmart, and when I add my Green Cheek Conure it will come from a pet store too, but that's only because there are literally no breeders or rescues or rehomes in my area, which is surprising given the size of the city I come from. Hopefully majority of the people buying those birds will do their homework, like I have, and make sure they're prepared to give those birds the best possible lives they can.

I don't like the idea of Petco carrying medium birds, let alone large birds... thought they stopped doing that.... although, being in Alaska, I'm sure there is a lack of breeders due to the climate, thus many of the birds must be shipped up to Alaska from the lower states...

What state are you in? And have you tried local ads, papers as well as online?

I agree with everything you say. Quick question....why does everyone in Alaska get money for free? From who?

Alaska gets permanent fund dividends.. this year was $800 and the highest I've ever seen was $3,000

you get it after living here for a specific amount of time, like three years..

Its basically given to us because oil companies are paying to use our land. its according to the previous years stocks i believe. everybody but felons, people in debt, people being sued etc receive a percentage.

I live in Wilmington, NC, right on the southeastern tip of the state. It's a good size city, so I was really surprised the nearest GCC breeder I could find is a minimum two hours away. While that's not a terrible distance, I really feel more comfortable meeting with a potential new bird before bringing it home, and while I could do that, its a 4 hour round trip and I may not like any of the birds any better than the ones here in town at the stores, and more importantly, they may not like me, lol!

Thats completely understandable! LOL

I traveled at least a 6 hour trip, one way, site unseen, to go pick up a bird! I had no clue if he'd like me or not, but it didn't matter! When I got there, he really didn't care for me! Now? I can't get the little buggger off me! Not unless I have the dremel in my hand! :18:

Was curious to know about local ads in your area... and you are right, not a big selection! Kind of surprising, but seems like my area - sparse!

Also found National Petland as a small animal pet shop that supposedly carries birds... never heard of it before so I'm assuming it's a "mom & pop" kind of place?

Cool, those breeders in Jacksonville didn't show up in any of my searches. You're right, it's about 1 hour up the road. And National Petland is in Southport, about 30-40 minutes down the road. I haven't been there, but yes, it seems to be a very small chain, not on the national scale of a Petco or the like. I definitely plan on checking them out when the time comes. Thanks for the info! Good to have options.
