I have talked about my 3yr old QP, Jack on this site before. He is a rescue and has been slow to come around. I got him on June 17th and in about one month have made some progress. In the last few days I have been letting him out of the cage which he enjoys. Once out he will walk over to me and lean over for me to pet him or give me a kiss. Although a little reluctant he will get on my shoulder and huddle up against my neck, turning around in circles as he moves. I honestly believe that is some sort of sexual behavior. When I try to get him on my shoulder by pointing to it as I approach the cage he will say "What are you doing" ? I would like to get him to step up and fly to me but I guess that will take more time. So my question is @ 3 years old is his personality set and is this the best I can hope for? Although, I think we have made phenomenal progress in less than a month. He is a sweet bird and I know he wants my company. Thanks

You've done well in just a month-- but there's no reason to think that you've gone as far as possible. Jack will set his own pace in how he'll interact with you, as in most everything. He's still getting to know you and getting used to his new home. Take everything at whatever pace Jack is comfortable with, and more progress will be made, one step at a time.

If he was "set in stone", so to speak, then you would not have seen any progress with him since getting him. And indeed, he's just a baby!

Agreed...This is a marathon, not a sprint...a month is no time at all when it comes to a new bird, this process can take months to years, as you must go at his pace, not your pace...So you just need to keep doing what you are doing and be patient.

Also, with Quakers, they often do move in "circles", they march back and forth, pace, etc. Not necessarily a hormonal behavior at all. My Quaker marches back and forth, actually she looks like she's walking the line for a cop in a DUI test, lol...They're funny little clowns, and have personalities and little quirks that are all their own...But they are also very stubborn, and it will take some time and persistence by you to train him, but if you just keep at it, then he'll come around. A month is no time at all...And as Gail said, a 3 year-old Quaker is still a baby...

Thank you-good advice. Yes they can be funny. When he walks up on top of the cage he will come over to me , lean over and kiss my cheek or nose. Then without fail he says "What are you doing"
