hey guys. the other day i noticed it looked like cooper's beak had a tiny little crack. turns out the tip of the top beak is sort of, well, peeling. its weird. its not like little tiny flakes. its like peices coming off the tip of his beak. they are really thin its not like its chipped. but like the top layer of beak is peeling to reveal the next. the new layer its soft or anything. he isnt in any pain. he still eats, climbs, plays, chews, bites my finger, and does everything normally. whats up with this?

From what I have read, beaks are kind of like our fingernails and they do peel etc as they grow.

I have noticed it with MAC, our B&G.

I'm sure there are more knowledgeable folks here that can give more info on this situation.

Same here, bandit's beak has been known to "peel" like that too, it's probably nothing to worry about - like azdesert said, it's sort of like fingernails, and if your bird doesn't seem very bothered by it, it's probably all good. but if you're in doubt or you just want some peace of mind, give your vet a call. :)

All birds beaks peel, but most birds groom themselves (ie- wiping beak onk bars, perches, etc), which takes the extra layers off. My RFM upkeeps her beak by wiping it 4 times a day on her tree stand and then quits, so since she can't take care of herself I take her to the groomer to have it filed off every month, but just for looks. It doesn't matter if it's peeling. I just have the groomer do it because I don't like how it loks so unkept.
