Pebbles is a bit hormonal

The last few days Pebbles has been making more noises, fluffing up, and resisting time out of her cage, she even growled at me and head butted my hand with her beak (fortunately she was nice enough not to bite me, even though I completely missed her body language). I am fairly sure her hormones are going crazy.

Today I said no to staying in the cage, and she has been searching for nest sights (fortunately she doesn't get on the ground, but she was flying around a bit, so I had to keep an eye on her).

I was on the computer in the spare room, and I heard her fly past and into the bathroom.

Here she is, confident there is a nesting hole in the reflection of the black tiles

Hahaha! Those black tiles and their pesky hidden nesting holes! I love how she seems to be up on her tip toes as she searches! Lol!

Yeah, like Pebbles, my ekkies do not go on the floor. It's something I've always discouraged, and this makes dealing with their hormonal surges so much easier than it might otherwise be. (Those spaces under the couch are irresistible to an ekkie hen, and getting one out from under there can be a less than... pleasant experience. On the maybe two occasions that Maya has wound up on the floor and found something nesty, everyone knew to wait for me. She'd have flensed the hands of anyone else! Lol! Those instincts are wired in HARD!)

She certainly is stretching, and the photo is after a few minutes, she would have happily stayed there all day...lol.

She is a smart girl, as it's the only place in the bathroom she can really reach the tiles herself. Usually she flies in and lands on the shower and waits for me to get her, so I was surprised to find that she had recognised the opportunity and had the skill to fly in the room and land on the rail. I actually thought it might have been a fluke, but later today she did it again.

She is so cute the way she searches out these nesting spots, but I fear Venus has spoiled it for Pebbles, I am doing my best to distract her and make sure she doesn't turn into a Demon, Pebbles has always been such a gentle girl, but she can be very stubborn, and I think if she put her mind to biting me, I would be in big trouble.

Oh, yeah. The structure and sharpness of an ekkie female's beak just makes for a far worse bite... if they are really out for blood. And if anything will put them in that frame of mind, it's hormones.

And yeah, distraction and refocusing before it becomes a real issue is definitely the way to go. Doesn't guarantee it won't happen anyway, but it definitely hedges the bet your way somewhat.

But Venus is just one of those ekkies who is just highly charged, hormonally speaking. In a case like that, you just do the best you can and ride out the storm.
