I'm not sure how many follow My Safe Bird Store on Face Book but they just posted this today. No story just the warning. What makes me curious is most any food you purchase has a few peanuts in it. I have been taking the ones out of any mix I buy and use them for treats now and then. My Macaw Likes almonds over anything so that is mostly what he gets for a treat. I was just curious what some of our experts on here think of this

Please feed Almonds and other healthy nuts instead of Peanuts !
Peanuts harbor mycotoxins & aflatoxin, a fungal toxin that can cause cancer, liver damage, and potentially fatal respiratory disease Aspergillosis

Christinenc2000 Great information. Thanks for sharing. I feed my crimsmon bellied conure avi-cakes from MSBS here daily. Do you know if they have any peanuts in them and also he loves pistacios nuts. Are they ok? Again thanks.

Not sure Critterman. I really was surprised with the Peanut information. Maybe when a few of the other members will post.
I knew the major no no's Avocado , Caffeine sugar, I guess anything in excess is bad but the peanut really shocked me

Aspergillosis is the "mold" Zilla has in her air sacs and is on a 90 day regimen of Sporinox, an anti-fungal medication. This information about peanuts doesn't surprise me, as her previous owners were feeding her peanuts by the handful several times a day. I hadn't heard the other things peanuts could cause though.

My vet told me Zilla can never have peanuts again so I have been pulling them out of all her mixes. The only way she can have peanuts now is super chunky peanut butter, and only as an occasional treat.

Vet said once they have had asper they are always prone to getting it again very easily.

She gets very upset when she sees me tossing them out the door to the squirrels!

Peanuts are actually in the bean family not nuts, they grow in pods UNDER the ground and can and most often times do have fungus and mold. I never eat them or feed them. I pull them from any mix I get and toss them outside for the squirrels.

See this is why I use this forum.
Thank you
