Peanut needs surgery

Poor peanut:( That must be very disappointing the procedure didn't work, but hopefully the new vet can get her fixed up and offer a permanent solution. Sounds like she will be in good hands with a vet who's done the procedure before.

Leanna, I'm so sorry about the disappointing news :(. So you're going to go ahead with the cloacapexy? Is there a pretty good success rate for that?

Thank you! There is a better success rate than with the ventoplasty, but there is still no guarantee that it will work. We will go ahead with the cloacapexy unless the doctor's think there is an alternative.

I'm so sorry to hear Peanut will need another procedure so soon. Leanna, I'm really glad she has you to take care of her. I hope this surgery will be a complete success. Please let us know how it goes with the new vet.

Thank you! We will have to wait for at least a couple more weeks before she has another surgery to be sure she is fully healed from the first one.

Thank you! Our current vet said that the other vet does this surgery all the time and would offer a better long term success. I respect her for her honesty with us. The only good news here is that she doesn't "think" there would be any reason, after the cloacapexy (assuming it all goes well and Peanut does well with it) we should be able to go back to handling and cuddling with her:eek:.

So sorry to hear the first procedure didn't fix the problem. Poor Peanut. How is she doing? How are you doing? I'm sure it is very stressful for you both. Keep us posted.

Thank you! Peanut is doing well. She acts normal and is eating/drinking, singing/dancing as usual. We are stressed and hopeful that the cloacapexy works. I don't even know what the next step would be if it doesn't work. Still waiting for the doctor in Akron to call. Hopefully that will be today.

I'm sorry for the disappointing result, but take heart you appear to have a dedicated and effective medical team. The honesty of your current vet and recommendation to one more experienced with this surgery is encouraging. It is helpful that Peanut apparently tolerated the anesthesia well - that is a helpful precursor for the next procedure.

Are you going to have a consult with the Akron doctor first, or bring her in the day of surgery? All the best to Peanut until she has the cloacaplexy!

Thank you! Yes we are very happy with our current vet and respect her honesty and caring. I don't know what to expect with the doctor in Akron yet. He didn't call me back yesterday so I guess I will know more after I talk to him, but I have to work today and tomorrow so I don't know when I can talk to him. Akron is about 2 1/2 hours away from us so this will take some planning/scheduling on our part:rolleyes: (hope my boss understands that I will be taking off work when this all happens).

Ok the vet, Dr. Riggs, from Akron called me today. He said he would evaluate Peanut to see if she may need hormone injections. Also, he would do a Cloacapexy and possibly do what sounds to me to be like a mini birdie hysterectomy. He would only do the latter if she needs it when he gets in there to do the Cloacapexy. She would have to stay there for a 2 or 3 days. We are very nervous to say the least! She would be 2 1/2 hours away from us, but apparently this is what she needs done and the best chance of long term "fix" of the prolapse. I made an appointment for August 25th, with surgery scheduled for the 26th.

Leanna, I know what you must be going through and I'm so sorry. If it helps at all, in the same situation, I'd make the same decision for Poppy. It sounds like Peanut has a very capable vet and you have every reason to expect the procedure to go smoothly. Poor Peanut, she's been through a lot already and so have you. Please keep us informed. Sending hugs to you and Peanut, you're both I'm my thoughts.

It sounds like this vet is confident he knows what needs to be done. Sounds like Peanut will be in good hands. I'd do it if it was to save my baby. I've left birds at the vet for days before. It will be okay ;).

Thank you Allee...it does help ALOT to know you would do the same! I do think this doctor is very good and I know that he has done this surgery several times before. We probably should have just gone to him and bypassed the smaller surgery but we were trying to save her the trauma. She has been a real trooper though. I'm very proud of her!

Thank you! I just wish she wouldn't be so far away from us. I'm glad to hear that you would do the same. It's very reassuring to us. We know it has to be done. Hopefully this will cure her and we can go back to cuddling her when all is said and done:)

I hope all goes well for her.

Thank you! It's so hard to know what to do, but as I understand it, there's not much else to do.

I would follow the exact course as you for my Peanut. If the initial least invasive procedure was insufficient, I'd seek out the most qualified and practiced vet to perform the "gold standard."

Hang in there and please keep us updated. Hoping you will soon be able to cuddle unrestricted with Peanut!!
