I was invited to a group on FB to pay it forward tomorrow. I have been thinking and thinking on what to do, and I would love for my pay it forward to have something to do with birds (or any animals). Any ideas on what I can do?

If someone in your neighbourhood has a pet bird that you know of, you could get them a few birdy toys? :) Like foraging toys or something.. i know i'd be incredibly grateful! That way you're helping the person by sparing them the hassle of finding and paying for good toys for their special friend, and you're doing something wonderfully awesome for the bird itself...? ^^

ohhhh, that's a hard one.

maybe you can think of something that happened in your past that made you appreciate it so much, that might give you an idea...idk

good luck, if I think of anything I'll let you know.

I love that idea, and I do have a friend who spoils her birds, but I bet she would love to have some surprises for them as well:) Thank you for the thought, I will do that and perhaps bring something to the dog shelter as well.

You could donate a sum of money to your local avian vet and ask that it be used to help anyone who might have difficulty paying a vet bill. Or, you could simply print off a certificate 'to the value of' and ask the vet to hand it to a worthy person. They could then redeem it as needed.

I like the shelter idea!!

they are always in need of things, or your volunteer time

I tried to volunteer before at the shelter, and they are supposed to call if they need help. They said they have plenty of volunteers for now:( I do know they could use some warm beds for the dogs and cats.
I also love the idea of talking to the vet...great idea.
I also am thinking of doing the Meals on Wheels for 2014. I think that would be so rewarding as well.

Meals on wheels is awesome! So many elderly people are dependent on those bagged lunches.

How about paying for someone's purchase the next time you visit a pet shop? Someone did it for me at a Tim Horton about a week ago, so I paid for the person behind me. It may me feel really good.

It is a great organization! I would also enjoy visiting with them. I think doing Meals on wheels would almost be more for me:)

I had thought about something like that, but am wondering how I would accomplish it without them knowing it was me?

yes, that is a great idea....once time I was in the dollar store and I was short $2.00 cash, and didn't have my debit card with me.

It just so happened my "not so friendly neighbour" across the street was there, and she tossed in the extra 2 bucks, and she had the nicest smile on her face(which was rare)....I've never forgotten it...of course I thanked her.

Just knowing that there are good people in this world was gratifying to me:white1:

Isn't it funny that it seems we all have neighbors like that.. I'm sure she will see you in a different way now.

Beth, Could it be she is just painfully shy and that's why she came off as unfriendly before?
Funny thing is, even if she is not usually a friendly person, I bet it made her day as well as yours. Doing for others feels so good, it almost seems selfish sometimes:)

Very true.

If you know somebody specific, it might be easier for the vet to pay an amount on their account so that next time they go in, they only have to pay value of service-your credit. The 'benefit a stranger' might be harder for them to implement (unless it's just for the next person in line rather than somebody in need).

Other than meals on wheels is there any other volunteer group you can join? A lot of people (me included) need practical help rather than financial or more "stuff". You could contact the hospital and see whether you could offer help to people without family hospitalized at short notice to sort out their pet care/kennel arrangements or feed their pets if it's a short stay.

I LOVE that idea! I never thought of something like that. I need to figure out who to contact on Thursday about that, I am sure that is something that would help people & their pets as well. wow, I am excited about this, thank you for the suggestion!:D

I think that it is a good idea BUT there are "issues" with things like this for organisations. They don't know you, you could be a criminal hoping to gain access to people's homes for nefarious purposes. If they put you in contact and an animal dies while you are popping in to feed, would the hospital be liable? What's your liability? You'd like to think that helping somebody out wouldn't get you sued, but people can be awful and any coincidental illness could be blamed on you....

The days of just lending a hand might have gone for good, in our litigious and "who do we blame"? society. Anyway, it's something for which I think there'd be a need (it happened to me), if it could be arranged properly.....

I am definitely going to look into it. They can run background/criminal checks if that helps...I can definitely see there would be a need for that. You know, when I talk to Meals on Wheels I could ask them if they have ever heard of anyone doing that. They may have some idea who to talk to, anyway:)
