Hi,
I'm searching for Parrotlets, I think they'd be a good pet for me. Two questions, does anyone know a reputable breeder near NYC (1.5 hour drive), most advertisements are shady and I won't to ensure I get a well treated and quality pet. Secondly, is it cruel to only buy 1 parrotlet? Are they a bird that really needs a companion for when I'm at work and can't interact with it?

Thanks.

I can't help with NY breeders, but I have a single parrotlet & he's been hanging around my other birds for four years now.....he's become well socialized & is very funny.....he came from an animal shelter...not a bird shelter...somebody just left him during the night, in his cage & covered with a blanket at the animal shelter.....

I like to tell people some p'lets are like dobermans, they will stand their ground with larger birds...Squeeky has challenged my Patagonian when she flies to my shoulder when he is already on me.....mine likes his parakeet swing, two hanging bells, his mirror & his Budda buddy...he hasn't messed with the other things I put in his cage & he sure doesn't appear to have ever been lonely here.....

I would suggest if you have no other birds around to keep him company that you get 2 to keep each other company. Just know if you get 2 they will bond to each other and probably not you. It is a decision you will have to make. Good luck!

I have one, in my mixed flock. He is a feisty little guy, and doesn't really want anything to do with the other birds. He tolerates them near him, but, does not want bird friends. So, keeping only one might be fine. I'd give it lots of toys. Mine likes shredding & preening things. Keep it busy & occupied. They are big birds in little bodies.
