My african grey was very will with heavy metal poisoning. We pulled her through and is back to her old self but is extremely skinny. Have tried sunflower seeds, peanuts, fruit, citrus, etc and she is not gaining weight.
What can I give her that will work quickly.

I wouldnt go for quick increase in weight but a slow and sure gain. Please stop the peanuts and sunflower seeds as they are not good IMO. You need to give her good solid nutrition not quick fixes, not having a go honestly. You wouldnt give someone chocolate bars constantly after being ill would you? If you concentrate on high fat quick fixes there is the chance she can become ill with Liver problems.

If you can get Harrisons High Potency Pellets then she is probably a prime candidate for them for approx 6 months and then if Ok onto Adult Lifetime. You should have some guidance also from your certified Avian Vet. Have you been told by how much she is underweight?

Have a go with a good quality chop also if she will eat it. Here is a brilliant section for you to look through http://www.parrotforums.com/parrot-food-recipes-diet/

If you can concentrate on a good balanced diet that will do her good and obviously things like pasta; wholewheat, quinoa, legumes are good. Please have a look at Sprouting also as this provides good nutrition. She could have treats of birdie bread also if she likes it? Because she is underweight you can give her these luxuries but remember to keep her healthy it has to be balanced OK :)

PS I am assuming that as she was so poorly she was not very active so may have lost muscle, it is therefore important that she gets as much exercise as she wants to help this.

I was basically going to say everything plumsmum said :) along with; congrats on your bird surviving! Were you able to determine where she picked up the toxin?

Welcome to the forums! I'm sorry your sweetheart has been so ill. Excellent nutrition advice from Plumsmum, much better to recover at a steady pace and gain weight slowly with healthy foods.

I would hand feed parrot baby formula.Full of everything and you don't have to guess if he's getting enough of the right things.Their weight is such a critical part to their revovery.Sounds like he's been through a lot .I would start with the formula then progress to what the others advised.

So glad your Grey survived an ordeal. Thanks for joining and sharing the story. Would definitely be a learning experience to understand how the toxicity occurred.

can we see some pics?
