Parrot rehoming...

Since there seems to be a lot of people joining just to rehome their parrot, which annoys many of the members on here, just wondering if there is a way to avoid this. A disclosure to agree too before joining or something, and if that is their soul purpose have them removed? If its more for selling for profit, etc. Its probably not possible, but its a thought.

The people who join to rehome their birds are probably looking for others who really care about birds and know how to take care of them. I would guess that the bird forums would be a good place to find an appropriate home. It's better than taking a chance on an ad. Just my opinion.

I had made a suggestion about requiring a minimum post count number like 25 or something like that before anyone is allowed to post in the classifieds section. This would eliminate the flippers and the fly by nighters.

I initially came here looking for a bird to purchase--figured that if they had joined a parrot forums, they cared enough about birds. So we should set the post minimum to be extremely low, if one is set at all, maybe 5. We don't want to discourage the people honestly looking to give their bird to a loving home on this site.

I understand why people would get annoyed with bird flippers and it bugs the snot out of me when someone joins and immediately starts replying to every single bird rehoming thread, regardless of how old it is, with the exact same canned reply.

But if someone joins just to rehome their bird, they probably did it with the same line of thought I had when I was trying to find a home for Hannibal. The regular posters here seem very knowledgeable about parrots so it kind of only makes sense that someone with a lot of bird knowledge and experience would be able to give your bird a better home than someone who just surfed through the classifieds on Ebay or Craig's List.

Yes, but you asked questions and looked for help before coming to the gut wrenching decision to re-home Hannibal. To me, why not utilize the vast resources of knowledge that this forum has to offer before immediately posting a bird for sale or to be re-homed. I'm not tooting my own horn, I have very limited knowledge of birds, but Mikey, Spirit & a ton of others are a wealth of information. Plus if they don't know, they can most likely point someone in the right direction. To me, re-homing should be the LAST resort for any responsible pet owner.

I hate it when people just join because they saw a free bird.
IMO if someone is looking for a good home. The best place would be a bird forum.(like stated above) Better chances. If a bird forum community told mento leave because I was looking for a awesome new home rather then putting in the ads. I would be confused. The bird community is all about help. You can't tell someone min 25 posts to attempt to find a new home. When there selling it for a stupid high price then yes. Something needs to be done. But someone truly looking for a good home and telling them to post min 25 times when the whole senerio could be urgent. There just gonna leave a try a diffrent forum. Or worse. Put the bird in the WRONG hands. IMO it's silly.
It's the Flippers and buyers that made my nerves twitch lol

Okay I see what you're getting at now, Mike. I had to take a break after I saw the Nanday thread. That just eats me up.

There *is* a wealth of knowledge here and I still think if I could have gotten over my fear of Hannibal, I could have put all the advice I was given to good use. Ultimately that was my failing.

Fortunately a lot of the same advice applies to birds of any size. Yeah, a 25 minimum limit makes more sense when you think of it in terms of this person coming to the forum and actually trying to get some help rather than just rehoming the bird and disappearing into the ether.

I joined to get info, yea, but at the same time I was hoping id find a breeder that everyone approved of. Ive yet to find the breeder, but I love the Info Ive gotten from everyone and I feel better prepared for the day when I accually do get a bird. (that and I love the storys I am seeing from everyone, makes me happy to see there are other people like me in the world)

I am so far away from the states, I cant help, or adopt any birds without flying anywhere.

This is a good thread because everyone is voicing an opinion. I think the term re-homing is sadly here to stay be it a bird or other type of animal. What needs to be done is how we handle it here on the froum. I do not like to see breeders advertise here because they should be paying for that advertising like other sponsors do such as Windy City. I willl usually ban them. We do have a forum for selling birds and that could be misleading. Do we need a forum specifically called Re-homing?

I will ask adm. to read this thread and we will see what happens. Anyone else with suggestions please continue here with your ideas. Thanks everyone!!

I initially joined to help others with their bird problem. Then decided to find someone re-homing their bird on here so I have nothing against it except for those with poor excuse to re-home a bird, especially one in poor condition. But at the same time if I can provide better condition for the poor conditioned bird, its a win win situation. In the forum I was in, for saltwater tanks, there is a minimal posting required to sell on the forum.

I dont like the flipping of animals for a quick buck, but honestly I would rather they come here to try and flip their bird, than on craigslist. At least here there are people who care about the birds, and not just trying to make a quick buck themselves.
May just be me, but it seems there are a lot of intelligible people here, that can A: help someone that wants their bird, but doesnt have the knowledge to keep or care for it. B: Have the desire to take in another bird to get it out of a bad situation.
Craigslist is just an internet pawnshop where everyone tries to make a bigger buck than they bought the thing for just the other day, this is bad for animals, really bad.

My wife and I got our Sunnie from someone on this forum, helluva deal actually for everything we got with the bird, and honestly I wish I could go back for some of the other cages he has. It was a win win situation for both of us, we got a great new family member.

I have to say I agree with Spiritbird. Rehoming is a part of reality, even though it is sad. I am new here, but I would rather have someone reaching out to experienced bird owners than to post on craigslist. I have seen too many posts on sites like that where I'm sure their bird did not get rehomed into a good environment. It seems like they are taking a responsible approach by coming here for help. I think it would be a good idea to have a forum specifically for rehoming.

I do think its annoying when people like the nanday poster trys to rehome a bird. But I have to agree that being people who care about all birds (not just ours) that this is the best place to find a good, caring home for a bird. The minimum posts would probably just discourage posters from using the forum. Maybe we can overlook bad posters in order to help the bird in their home. It is obvious when someone is flipping, those posts can be deleted & the posters banned.
