Hi All

I bought a second cage for our newly adopted Moluccan Mango, and it needs repainting.
What is a bird safe eco friendly paint that I can get at Home Depot or Wal-Mart?

The cage was pre-owned, and it has lots of rust.....

Thank You for your help!

Do you know the history of the birds that lived in it?
There are some nasty viruses etc that you don't just paint over.

I don't know of avian safe paint that you can get at Wal-Mart, but there are brands online.

I have learned from bitter, heartbreaking experience that rust in a bird cage can be deadly. If your bird ingests the rust or old paint, heavy metal poisoning can ensue, let alone your concern over new paint! And personally I don’t know if I could ever be sure I’d got rid of all of the corrosion in an old cage. Take it from me, it’s not worth the risk - buy a new cage!

Please use extreme caution when rehabbing an old cage. As already mentioned, any corrosion can be deadly, and you'll need a durable lead-free paint. AFAIK most paint sold in the U.S. is compliant, but understand most cages are powder coated for durability. Not sure if a spray-job will remain safe.

If funds are a concern, you might find a great used cage in excellent condition online, such as Craigslist, etc. Any pre-owned cages must be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, but that is far easier than repainting!
