Suspicious behavior and IP address from Cameroon (of all places!)

Turned up all the stones and sniffed around. No new info so this thread will remain here. However the previous warning stands. It smells fishy.

I almost got caught with one of the Cameroon cons when I was first looking at getting a parrot 12mths ago. I had "been approved" to buy a Macaw baby and it was the next day when an email arrived telling me to organise a Western Union money order for the cost of the bird plus delivery which made me suspicious as here in Oz we don't really use WU and the bird was meant to be in another state so the whole thing smelled fishy. I then got barraged with phone calls from a heavily accented man telling me " I needed to get the payment through asap as the poor bird had been in a container at the depot for 6 hours already and could be in great distress. I was disgusted at the way they tried to play on my feelings. I got one of my tech guys at work to check the IP address and found it was Cameroon and the next time they rang I threatened to get the authorities onto them and I never heard from them again.

I was amazed at how many of these ads are in parrot classifieds in Oz and how easy it was to be duped.

Cameroon is located on the west coast of central Africa. It is also where a lot of internet scams are from particularly in relation to birds and wildlife. In my case I was supposedly buying a macaw from Sydney, Australia and I live in Melbourne, Australia so having to send a western union money order to Cameroon was a give away that it was a scam. I was just lucky I realised it before any money had changed hands.
