painting the basement

I have done a lot of research here, and it seems okay to do some painting as long as latex products are used. We are at the priming and painting stage in the basement. There's the laundry room, landing area, and a rumpus, or T.V. Room. I am very sensitive to oil based products myself, and I only use low voc latex products, just looking for your thoughts, our GCC lives upstairs, the weather isn't warm enough for wide open windows, I will open them a bit in the basement, the heating system is still running. :green2:

Larry, most major paint manufacturers today offer both low VOC & zero VOC paint products, both for primers & finish paints.....The only problem you could run into is the possibility that you might be painting over someone's previously painted oil based paints, which needs a suitable primer to seal & allow latex painting.....you can use a white cloth/rag & alcohol to check the painted surface.....wet the cloth with alcohol & rub the painted surface, if it was painted with latex paint, it will come off on the cloth if it was an oil based paint it will not come off on the cloth.....previous oil based surfaces not properly primed will not accept latex paint...the paint will run/gel & streak, which will require sanding to then prep the surface.....
