Painting Old Cage! Advice??

Hi everyone! I have metal cage that has some rust in it. it is full metal and is not those company powder baked paint cages. This old cage now have some rust and we plan to paint this cage. Of course we will first get rid of the rust first. I read that ECOS have a bird cage paint that is safe for birds. We plan to buy the paint from ECOS and paint our cage to make it look nicer for our baby BF amazon that will be coming home in 8 weeks. This pain does require at least few days to be completely dry but we will let it dry for more than a week because our baby wont be home in 8 weeks.

What do you guys think about repainting this cage? Yes or No? Good or Bad? I heard that you have to be very careful of what paint you are using to paint your cage and this paint is specifically for bird cages.

Honestly. I wouldn't risk it.
Spend 200 or so on a brand new on via eBay/amazon and be 100%
Safe.

The problem with rust is that it's all but impossible to actually eliminate it from the metal and once painted, it will quickly spread and expose itself again.

I also recommend getting a new cage.

IMO, even if you do get the 'right' paint, it just isn't worth all the work and mess. Also with used cages, believe it or not I've heard several times of cockroaches living in the hollow framework, and coming out in the new owner's home. Also there's potential disease factor to disinfect and wonder if you really 'got it all'.

I know not everyone agrees with this, but I figure WHY? ...when a brand new basic powder coated cage isn't really that expensive.

I understand that a new cage is not that expensive. I just have an old cage laying around so just thought that maybe instead of spending 400-500 on a new cage I could just polish this old cage. So I wanted to get some advice from people in this forum. Thank You for all that commented on this.

You won't have to spend that much.
You will probably spend more painting and worrying about the safety.

You can get a really nice cage for around 200 now.

NO paint is safe for something a parrot will come into oral contact with (though it may be safer when painting walls in the bird area due to low VOC's). I would definitely not expose a baby to painted anything. There is always a potential of it flaking off and the bird ingesting it. Even if it's supposedly "non-toxic", I just can't foresee paint being a good thing for a bird to ingest. If the paint chips and rust is exposed and the bird is in oral contact with the rust, that can be VERY toxic and/or potentially fatal. Old cages that have lots of rust/missing powder coat are best taken to a scrap metal vendor. You won't get much scrap out of one, but it's better than paying big bucks to the vet and possibly loosing your baby over an old cage. This topic has been discussed many times on this forum and others, and the conclusion is always the same- batter safe than sorry!
