paddy the Patagonian conure

To be honest I would expect Paddy to fairly much cling to his cage to start with - has it a playtop?

So apparently the breeder didn't hand-feed or train or work with the baby(ies)... that's too bad... now you have extra work to do, almost as if he were wild-caught. But... even wild-caught birds can learn to love people. I think you're wonderful to be so patient and loving. Oh, and I'm glad you liked my earlier "essay" on Patagonians. My pleasure!

Lots of time and patience goes a long way - when Archie came to us he didn't know how to play with toys but would take food from us. 4 months later he loves having his head rubbed, is clicker trained and is currently shouting at me in a very pathetic voice because he wants some treats [emoji4]

I have a play stand, I used a clicker to train one of my other conures as he had been used for breeding and had not had much human contact and now he loves nothing more than tucking himself up in my hair and having a nap. Might try the clicker with paddy.

Archie really took to the clicker - only have to pick up the chop stick we use for target training and he gets really excited [emoji3]

I almost bought a patagonian once! How delightful! I was just a kid and my mom ended up stopping me, but he was an incredible bird!

SilverSage...

I would gladly have LOANED you a Patagonian on a regular basis over the last 30 years!
Nawwwww, I'm lyin'!!!!!

Now my ol' man would have, though...

How's Paddy getting on?

I am so thrilled there are a few members who have Patagonians, I have never seen one in person and am absolutely drooling over Paddy, Archie and The Rickeybird. They are such gorgeous birds.

Thanks, Terry!

Any up date on how you're getting on with Paddy?

Hi paddy is slowly getting more confident, he refuses to come out of his cage and have still not found a treat that he loves.

Glad paddy is doing ok [emoji4]

Have you tried pine nuts or sunflower seeds?
How did you get on with switching to pellets?

Once you find a treat he likes you can do some touch training with him to help build a closer bond. Archie loves his training, he gets so excited every night when he knows it's nearly time to do it.

Please consider pellet-training... I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. 30-ish years ago, Harrison's was still a small company. My vet was actually able to talk to Dr. Harrison about my bird's species and status, and they decided on the High Potency. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff. My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic.

Oh my GAWWWWD, Archie looks good. Like a different bird. So active and feathery and perky. That call is the exact one the Rbird makes!!!!!!!

He will eat the pellets one day and then throw them everywhere the next but he did eat some kiwi yesterday which he normally ignores so that was great lol

Stick with it, he'll give in eventually give in and try more stuff. It's just takes them forever to realise it's ok to eat fruit and veg.
Archie isn't big on veg (he doesn't get much fruit because of his gout). He will try more stuff if I give him some while I'm eating. His favourite at the moment is garden peas and sweet corn.

Which pellets did you get?

Like Gail we use Harrison's - fine and course to give a bit of variety [emoji4]

Maybe you could try some super-hot chiles. Reportedly, the parrot's sense of smell and taste is so poor that they really relish the hot stuff cuz they can really taste it! Here's the Rbird devouring his favorite treat in the world... Serrano peppers. He first guts it and eats all the seeds, then bites off pieces of the meat and crushes and swallows the juice, then tosses the peel and takes more bites. As some of you already know, it's the only way I get him back into the cage... toss one in and he flaps in after it!
P.S. I'm SOooo enjoying this Patagonian 'fellowship'! There aren't many of us around...

Jim, thank you so much! I derive more joy and entertainment here than I could ever hope to return, but I'll keep trying!
Did I ever tell you the story about how my sainted mother and grandmother (NOT BIRD PEOPLE) were always telling people that I had a pet Patagonian Condor that sat on my shoulder and sang. I could never straighten them out! Can you imagine what people thought?????
Thanks again. You're very sweet.
