My parakeets (3 boys and 3 girls) were doing their mating back around Christmas and New year's, and laid the eggs, etc., etc. The first egg hatched on January 29th, and we wound up with 7 babies. Now, in the last couple of weeks, they've all been mating and laying again. Is this normal? I thought it was a once a year deal? Help, we're being overrun with birds!!!

I had a flock that grew faster than I had intended, and they seemed to have no regard for the season or giving their bodies a break. I took their nest box and gave them plenty of other things to do :)

Our homes are ideal places for breeding. We provide constant day/night exposure, constant warmth and a constant amount of food, not to mention easy places to find and build a nest at!

Can you give us a current picture of the cage setup?

Budgies will breed if given the opportunity!!!! You should watch that video off PBS but I've known about it before watching it is that Budgies will breed if they have plenty of food available. So in order for you to stop them is place them separately and remove the nest boxes!!!! Otherwise they will go on and on until the female or the male exhaust. Which could result in death and sickness.

Okay, first of all, we let them fly free. Second, they do not like the nest box at all! We had to place the Freeway's eggs in there so she would at least be in the cage. Misty liked a cardboard box, so that's where her's were born, then we moved them into a box in the one cage. Nipper layed a few duds, then gave up. Now all 3 are laying, and they were actively trying to get in the kitchen cabinets(Nipper and Freeway were born in my one cabinet January 2013) at first, but then found nice warm hiding spots in the living room.

If you want to get them to stop laying, you need to restrict *all* access to anything nest like.

Oh gosh, our whole house is full of nesting possibilities, lol. I wouldn't mind keeping them in their cages, but the boyfriend says their birds, they should fly. I think he's crazy.

I agree with your boyfriend! ;)

Can you figure out a way to remove or limit access to the possible nest areas?

Oh I forgot your the one with cabinet babies....just let him know if something isn't done soon you'll end up with a big flock of keets soon!!!!

Yes, we had the cabinet babies, lol. I just don't want to be like the bird hoarder from Aurora, Il(near me) in 2012, who had over 300 live birds in his townhome, and over 100 dead ones when officials went in. I can kind of see how that would happen. I was very sad to give give 3 of them to a friend. They're very cute....
