Our conure feeding....

Ok I've read a lot about what our conure can eat as far as all the fruits and veggies. But my question is how much do you serve them? He's only I believe 3-4months old. He has his bowl seeds and mix that the breeder gave us. Do we just mix up another bowl in the bottom of his cage? He's doing very well as far as being hand fed. I just want to make sure he's getting enough and a different variety.

I went to the store and got grapes, apples, and oranges for him. My fiance was laughing at me saying that everything in the basket belong to Chuy.....lol

Any pics you have of food bowls and ideas would help.

Thanks

Or should I just try him on a bag of pellets?

I'm hoping other members will throw in their 2 cents on this. There are so many ways to feed parrots, and luckily there are many thigns they can eat and enjoy :) They do not necessarily need a lot of fruits, as they have lots of sugar in them (you could limit the fruit to a couple times a week for a treat), but just like with humans you want to include more of certain food groups than others.

From what I've read on this forum, researched, and seen with recipes, it's good to get them on a pelleted diet as a base, and then supplement that with 'chop', which is a blend of chopped veggies, grains, pasta, beans. Here's a detailed guide to a chop recipe with pictures. You can give them seeds occasionally (not meant to be their main diet) but choose a high quality seed with no sunflower seeds in it to keep the fat content down. You can give them as treats, tho!

Just read through all the guides and threads on this diet/feeding forum, it will give you so much insight as to what to feed.

Here's an informative site about what exactly you can feed them...

As far as WEHN to feed them, it really is based on how much time you have. Some people make their 'chop' and make enough to freeze and last several months, while others prepare chop every single day for their parrots, while others prepare a couple days worth at a time. It's easier if you only have one parrot (or a smaller species), and it really is very easy when you get the hang out it and what to feed.

I think most feed their birds chop in the morning shortly after their birds wake up (breakfast, mm!), some may leave pellets out for their bird all day to eat when they get hungry through the afternoon, and then feed an additional meal in the evening (chop, mixed with some seeds or a treat of some kind, a type of nut they enjoy). Variety is key here. You want to offer as much variety as you can, and change/switch it out often. It helps to find a fruit/veggie that your bird goes crazy for, and you can incorporate that specific fruit/veggie into their training.

Hope that helps a little! And hoping other members will reply to share their feeding schedules!

Thank you so much for you reply. We will try some chop, and also some pellets.
