Opinion on a cage

That's a pretty big cage, any large cockatoo would be in a good sized cage(not suggesting one, they are the hardest parrots to care for), I think a macaw would do alright too, although not positive because of that long tail lol

I've seen people using that corner cage for Macaws. What do you have your heart set on???

MikeyTN, we aren't 100% decided yet. My heart will always belong to the CAG but that may not be an option until my daughter is older due to her allergies. We are looking at macaws.

I take it she's got the powder dust allergies....gotta stay away from Greys, Cockatoos, and Cockatiels then.....Have you guys thought about Eclectus?? Their feathers are very hair like. They don't really have much of an dust issue.

Eclectus are on my short list! My biggest concern is that I get a bird that won't bother Sofia's allergies, but that will also be large enough to perhaps intimidate my siamese into not thinking it's an easy meal - I know how deadly cat saliva can be to birds and have plans to keep them separate, but I never can tell what is going on in that cat's head...

A large cockatoo for sure, but with the long tail of a macaw... I'd have to see pics of one next to it to give an opinion.

I'm really not sure how the cats are around Eclectus but I know for sure my JoJo was kept around cats before cause he meows and he show great interest in cats when he sees our kitties. Then he meows at them. But the kitties are deterred from the macaws for sure. All 3 kitties here does not bother the macaws.

Thankfully I am in no hurry here - soonest we would be willing to add a parrot would be spring 2014, and that's by no means our target date. Because I plan to only have one parrot (other than a possible CAG years in the future) I want to ensure the one we do end up with is the best choice for our family for years to come.

Macaws are fine for pets, but it's much easier to maintain a bird that doesn't have such a long tail. Travel cages for example are difficult to find. I have a macaw so I should know. lol.

why don't you go for an amazon? ;D

That is a decent size cage for most of the medium / large species (besides the macaw because of tail) as many other people have stated. Though I have seen Macaws in this cage before (if not an identical cage) I would not recommend it because their long tails end up looking very rough very quickly from the lack of down space.

A couple Quakers would make a great nest in there :p But, hey... I favor these cute little guys. Instead of the larger macaws, why not a Severe Macaw or a Yellow Collared Macaw? Just throwing something out there! GL with your decision!

Thanks BirdBrains - I've read that Severes can be tough but I haven't ruled out a YC or other smaller macaw. As stated, I am just concerned with it being large enough that my cat will be slightly intimidated by it. He's a pain in the rear, too smart and fearless for his own good.

Any medium to large sized parrot! From large conures to amazons, large poicephalus, pionus, macaws, greys, cockatoos, eclectus, hawk head....

Although ekkies are sounding like they may be at the top of the list since they are supposed to be great for those who have allergies.

Oh!!!!!! And I forgot another one!

Great billed parrot. Not very common, but they kind of remind me of an electus and an alexandrine smushed into one parrot! With some extra markings, of course! ;)

Our favorites right now are Yellow Collar macaws and green wings (which I'm not certain are the best first big bird!). Eclectus are still very much in the running but I'm leaning toward YCs.
