We offshore fishermen have been doing this for many years. Finding birds on the radar quickly gets you on fish. Of course it takes a quality radar and operator.
I have seen a large flock out on the water just once.No Radar we could just see them in the distance . We raced the boat to the location and they were over a large school of Blue Fish. We were so amazed and watching we forgot to cast into them lol They were gone just as fast as they appeared.
Unfortunately large flocks of birds do not register on airport surveillance radar as they employ a software device to delete very slow-moving non aviation targets. Sadly, high concentrations and/or very large birds have caused a number of aircraft crashes.
