cocketial and alexanderin and the coming Derbyan parakeet
First of all, I like to make it clear that Male and Female Derbyan are the same, no matter in the talking ability or tricks learning. Some says Male Derbyan is better talker. No proof at all. Some also says Female Derbyan bites people a lot in breeding season, well, it depends, not all the female Derbyan bite. The only obvious difference is the red beak, vivid red makes it more beautiful. That is why Male one is more expensive here, and of more popularity.

As we all know, without DNA test, you can barely tell the sex of a Derbyan util 8 or 10 months later, when the beak starts to turn red or remain black.
Here is one way to distinguish the sex of baby Derbyan between 2 months to 8 months.

Just by observing the shape of baby Derbyan's head. If it's very flat and almost no slope on the top of the head, and kind of like a square, then it's 85% a male. You can see that from the pics of my baby Derbyan( Double Six, since its birthday is Jun 6th, 6 is a very lucky number in chinese). And if there happen not to be any white feather in the red square area (see the pic), then 95% a male Derbyan. But eveything has exception, that's why the rest of 5% exists.

Pics attached, don't know how to insert pics from my computer.
Mid-night in China, got to go to bed now.

thanks, Danny.
in fact, Derbyan parakeet is mainly from China, very common bird here, especially in Sichuan Province and Tibet.

Aww he is really cute and it does look like he's smiling. How old is he? I'm kind of surprised he's only on three feedings a day, he looks pretty young.

He's about 41 days old now, you may notice there are no feathers yet in front of the chest, borned in Jun 6th, that's why his name is Double Six. One feeding every two hours for the first week, 6 feedings for each day after one week, donw to 3 feedings after one month, but make it thicker. So meal time is 8:00 am, 7:00 pm, 12:00 pm. I get back home late, so cannot make it average 8 hours for one feeding. That is why he gets 35 ml at 8:00 am, 25 ml at 7:00 pm, 30 ml at 12:00 pm.
