Merlin a Red Crowned Amazon
For several years Merlin has had a summer allergy problem. The first year we saw 2 vets, lots of tests, many types & doses of antibotics, nothing seemed to change. In the fall, he's back to perfect. This year it feels different. The other nite, he woke me up w/what I can only call snoring. It was a little snort w/every breath. When he woke up it stopped. I called the vet this am & we have to be there @ 4:15. I'm glad I called, later in the am his voice has a different sound. Otherwise he is playing, flying, eating, pooping all normal. Its 1.5 hour drive so we will be leaving soon.

Has anyone else ever had a bird w/an allergy problem?

Good luck at the vet. I have never known any parrots with allergies, so I am no help, I just wanted to say good luck to you and Merlin on your visit today. :)

Birdie may have an URI with voice change. Good to hear you are taking to a vet.

awww hope it all goes well for you both, and if it wasn't for the voice change, i'd say you had a snoring bird, cos nut snores at times at night

We're back. It was his allergies, heart, lungs everything good. Didnt see any swelling in his throat, his sinus looked clear. I did insist on an antibotic, holiday weekends are not the time to have a serious problem. I have to pickup some benedryl drops tonite. He was very stressed. But the ride in the air conditioner seem to help his wheezing. I know it helps my allergy symptoms. Still worried about the voice change, this hasn't happened before. My vet did say that allergies get worse as they age. Amazons seem to have more allergies than other birds. Thanks everyone.

Really? I did not know that. My BFA hasn't had any problems with allergies, and I sure hope he never does. It is hard enough to have a bull terrier with allergies. I swear she is allergic to air. ;)

I am happy to hear everything turned out OK, and you were smart to get those antibotics. I probably would have never thought about the weekend coming up!

Have you looked into getting a air purifier? I hope merlin feels better soon!!! :)

I think a air purifier is on the list or air conditioning. I have always noticed that my allergies improve when I'm in air conditioning. By the time we got to the vet, merlin had improved except for his voice.

He was a riot at the vet, he calls kids "boy", a little girl was talking to him & she kept saying "I'm a girl, not a boy". She & merlin were a pair, they kept calling out to the dogs "bad dog" & laughing.

I'm so glad I took him, its a relief, I think we'll both sleep better tonight.

That's funny!!!! :)
When I bring my birds to the vet everyone comes over to look.
