Not the towel!

Cancelled the avian vet appointment and went instead to a different one. While not an avian vet it seems they have a vet there who does most of the bird care. He seemed very nice and seemed to know what he was talking about.

Jasper stepped up for him easily but squawked when the vet tried to touch his head..so...in comes the tech with the towel..oh he did *not* like that one..they put him on his back and the vet felt his body. He asked what I fed him..probably thought he was skinny..I think he is, he seems to want to do more playing than eating. I even leave him in his cage in the morning and then around lunch when he gets his pellet mix, hoping he will just eat. He knows where his food dishes are..I guess like a child he's more interested in toys. I digress..

The vet examined his nose and eyes and in his mouth. He explained he was checking for fungus and whatnot. I appreciated his explanation, I told him I have another bird but he's never been to the vet at all. He said Jasper seemed quite healthy and he wouldn't recommend bloodwork. He did say he should have a fecal smear and I'm fine with that. I didn't ask, what does that test for?

They weighed him and he's at 420g. He was 408 when I brought him home two weeks ago. What he's gaining I'm guessing is probably muscle because of all the climbing around he does and has the ability to do now. It feels to me like his breastbone is still pretty easily felt. I meant to ask him what he thought Jasper's weight should be. I am contemplating buying a gram scale.

The funny thing was he asked that there wasn't a bird doctor in my town and I said no, they said they just have someone who basically does wings and nails. Somehow the name got mentioned, this vet is my cats' vet here at home and he said he went through school with her and he's the one who taught her wings and nails. lol

The fecal smear is to look for bacteria and parasites. Usually they always do this when you go in for a wellness check. They will do the throat if they see yeast or redness.

I think most of them hate the towel, lol! Rowdy is good once she's in it, and Pete wasn't so bad. Merlin has been in it so much lately though she is scared to death of it. I seem to be able to get her in it a lot easier than the vet assistants can. The last time I did do it because the previous time they chased her and she fell on the floor :-(

I wouldn't worry about Jasper's weight. He's still a growing baby. As an adult Merlin has weighed anywhere from 448 to 498. And Jasper probably won't hit close to 500 until he's a fully hormonal adult. The ovary or teste enlarging for breeding season is what ups their weight at that time.

It's funny because we went later today to see his old mums..the manger there when I told her what he weighed at the vet said "oh he's lost weight"..no you weighed him at 408..and said that Gracie, the other big baby, went out at nearly 500..I think she was perhaps a little bigger than him..but yeow..lol

And thanks for the weight info. You are right, he is just a growing boy yet and has a long way to go before he can drive and buy booze. :32:

Sounds like a good vet! I did a blood panel when I first got Puck though, because it can tell you a lot. A fecal can also tell you a lot though. Puck got a fecal and blood test when he was sick, and the fecal test showed his giardia, but I guess his white blood cells must not have been elevated because the blood test was pretty normal (just some sort of protein was off, doctor said it was probably from the giardia).

Puck has been known to escape from the vet after being toweled! At the first vet I took him to he escaped and they had to chase him around the room, haha!

I thought I read online that around 450 was a normal CAG weight. So if Jasper is 420 now as a newly weaned baby, I think he is just fine.
