Not sure if this tree is safe

It looks like a ficus tree to me (Weeping Fig Tree).
Ficus benjamina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's a very common house plant but on the toxic list of most house plant lists.
Safe and Toxic Plants for Pet Birds List, poisonous and toxic plants for pet birds, safe herbs for pet birds, safe flowers for pet birds, safe garden plants for pet birds, safe garden flowers for pet birds, safe seeds to grow for pet birds, safe hous

Not sure what makes it toxic, but you probably want to get it out of the house.

Good job getting things back on track HRH Di! and good eye!

I found a report on the toxicity of Weeping Fig Tree Weeping Fig Toxicity

Regurgitation was one of them...:scared01:

now I am scared.

Its 10pm ant night here so I will probably have to wait till the morning to find an avian vet. There is a 24hr vet but i don't think they would be able to help. But I don't know what i would get them to help with anyway. I just went to check on him and he seems fine. I did witness some regurgitation, but as I say this seemed more like affection rather than chronic. Beak rubbing is another common characteristic of his too. Those are the only two symptoms I have seen, he is very active. I think he is going to be fine but I also think i will be moving this plant. Never underestimate the curiosity of a parrot! I will call the vet tomorrow and ask him what he thinks. It was just one bite, I grabbed him the second I saw him doing it. If only i could find the bit that came off to be sure he didn't eat any.

Also Ben that report on the toxicity (I noticed after posting) was for a budgie, so theres a bit of a size difference there.

What a pain when the symptoms are things he does naturally lol. Makes things a little tougher to figure out.

It's almost certainly a ficus. The problem is there are over 800 species of ficus, and only some are dangerous.

Ficus benjamina is toxic, Ficus elastica (aka 'rubber bush' but not the same as a rubber tree) is not toxic. This looks more like the latter to me.

Compare the narrow leaves that tapper to a sharp point from F. bejamina
File:Weeping-fig Ficus-benjamina.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
to the broad leaves with a short tip from F. elastica
File:Ficus elastica leaves.JPG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
then look at the leaves on your plant. I'm pretty confident it is an elastica, but a visit with the vet wouldn't hurt. The problem is you'd be better off visiting a botanist or taking some clippings to a plant store. A veterinarian doesn't have any training in identifying plants.

Thanks again AD

Lol thats the same thing I was thinking, what am I gonna say to the vet if I don't know what he ate "my bird ate a leaf, fix it please" lol

I will try and find out exactly what it is so I know if I can keep it or not and if its going to hurt him. In the meantime i will keep a close eye on him.

Hey,

Its a Schefflera arboricola (also known as the dwarf schefflera, dwarf scheff, arb’s and dwarf umbrella tree)

"A new cultivar of Schefflera arboricola, named Covette, combines the characteristics of leaf glossiness, dwarf habit, vigor and good propagation by stem cuttings, among others. " - Dwarf schefflera named Covette - Patent PP06134

The ASPCA has classified it as toxic (heres a nice table of toxic plants - Plant types and their toxicity)
at least its not fatal... however on this study (Schefflera arboricola risk assessment) and also on this peteducation page (Poisonous and Safe Plants for Birds) its classified as safe.

There is one of these trees outside my avairy, and my birds bite all the leaves off that come into the cage- none have been sick from doing that yet. Hope your birdy will be ok :)

Hmmm, not sure if that is the right plant or not. The name seems right but sure doesn't look like that.

He seems fine this morning, but I am still keeping a close eye on him.

Im not a botanist :) but relatively sure thats what it is. Definitely not a Ficus elastica - completely wrong leaf arrangement. It has the right leaf arrangement and leaf shape and colour, and the branch placement too for a dwarf umbrella. The slightly longer stems that are attached to the leaves is maybe because the plant is unhappy (sick) or still young or something.

Heres a pic of one that looks similar to yours (with more branches): Google Image Result for http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/2003/02/24/Sunshine12/f042fe.jpg

I use an app called plant snap that identifies plants pretty well so maybe try that.
