Echo a male B&G Macaw
Well its me again.Sorry for all the threads, but anyways Im having a problem with Echo's stepping up.He will not step up from his cage.Ive tried giving him treats, nicely asking, and trying to force him.Yet nothing has worked!Anyone know how to fix this?

I would love to hear what people have to say about this because I'm really struggling with the same thing. Kenji also does not step up from his cage, and hasn't for 20 years. Whenever I try he gets scared and doesn't trust me the rest of the day. Sometimes I put my hand up to him quickly and confidently and he panics, if I go slow and careful he panics. If I try a stick/perch or a leather glove he acts like it's going to kill him. Rather tha stepping up he will be afraid and fall to the floor.

I havn't worked on this more because it is affecting his trust in me. I'm at a loss of what to do.

Will they climb out on to a stand or the top of there cage? Then see if they will step up there.

With Bosley I let him come to me from his cage, I have my couch right beside the cage and he would crawl into my lap. I also have a T-stand that he could crawl onto himself from his cage.(used food to get him there in the beginning)
Bosley would not step up on me at all and sticks are evil so he thinks!
It took a long time, but after about 2 months of him crawling on my lap I encouraged him with food to come on my arm. everytime he put a foot on me I rewarded. Then I would get him that he would have to use both feet to get the treat. I did all this from him in my lap onto my arm, never forcing him, never making him stay.
Everyday he did it more and more.
I have him 8 months now and in the last 2 he will step onto my arm/hand from anywhere without treats. I think it's a matter of trust/bond and just creating the habit.
He still freaks when he sees a stick or glove, I have chosen not to use those!

Kenji is strange, he will gladly step up from the floor but no where on his cage, not even the top. The bottom of his cage has a storage shelf he will step up from, but I don't consider that his cage, it's more like a elavated floor.

He doesn't step up even on top of the cage.

Echos the same way. He'll step up from my bed or the floor.

Jackie's the same way... When he's on his cage it's his way or the highway, but when he's on his perch stand he'll do whatever I want him to. Since his stand is the same height as the top of his cage, I just stand it next to the cage and when I see he's on the stand I'll move it away from the cage- the further he is from his cage, the easier he is to work with.

How did you try and force him?? And HOW does Echo react when you ask him to step up?

Fortunately I don't have a problem with any of my fids when it comes to stepping up and coming out of their cages.

Here is what I would suggest: Get a T-Stand and place Echo on it. Practice the step up command until he knows it so well that he will automatically lift his foot when you tell him to step up. Of course that will take many sessions. Keep the sessions short. Reward reward reward!!! Do it away from his cage, as he may try to get INTO his cage to avoid training sessions, lol.

I think a bird who doesn't want to come out of his cage when asked to step up is still looking at his/her cage as a comfort and safe zone.

I tried to force him by pressing a little bit in o his stomach. He just runs away.

I am working on making a T-stand but he might be scared of it.

Sunshine for the longest time wouldn't step up for me out of her cage. I started trying to train her by cupping my hand behind her back before I started putting the light pressure on her stomach. She didn't seem to mind, and now she'll usually step up fine, although sometimes she's feeling territorial (in which case I use a chopstick or leave her alone for a bit) and sometimes she's just interested in exploring (and so I have to cup my hand behind her back to get her to step up, but she will then without complaint).
