Noodles and the vet

Parrots
Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
Noodles and I went to the vet yesterday because I was worried she might have another egg :0 I put it off a few days because of work and I would have bet you MONEY that she was going to lay an egg..Her food preferences changed dramatically, then she started eating a ton and was super hormonal if I looked at her too long (vibrating etc). The vibrating is sexual, FYI and I don't pet her on anywhere other than the head or neck and she has no shadowy spaces and 12 hours sleep..Plus, it took her more than 14 years to lay an egg at all.

300 dollars later, she has no egg...but definitely in hormonal mode.

I thought she was having egg issues based on the last time and based on the fact that she felt heavier.

She is over a pound (and has been for years), but the vet also said that her weight is up by 2 oz (which made him wonder about an egg too-- as neither of us could feel the last one because it was up high). She is not overweight, btw. Since I adopted her, she's always been a healthy weight (and she still is, as her typical weight was on the lower side, while still being normal).

Blood was drawn but because of an issue with the needle and clotting, the sample was void..EDIT-- a standing xray was taken, as was a gram-stain and a physical exam was performed.

Now I have to take her back at some point and blood, which is annoying because it is an hour drive and my car sucks.

Any thoughts are welcome!

Final funny story: The vet tech (who is always there) said she is THE CALMEST parrot he has ever seen. LOL!!! what?! I mean, she can be super sweet, but I'd hardly call her calm! She's an attention *you know what* for sure, and she is pretty calm when I am around, but "CALMEST" ...he was serious too...haha!!! He was wrong, but it's nice to think that I have a "well-behaved" child lol

Yup- did an xray. They didn't not mention eggs---that was the main reason she was in (b/c I thought she might have another). He just said that he couldn't feel it if there was one- although it could be up high. There was no egg when they did the xray though

She did drink a lot of water the night before during a bath in her water dish and she ate a huge breakfast.

They did a gram stain, x-ray,physical exam and nail/beak trim. Tried to do blood and the sample clotted before it could all be added to the vial because of an issue with the needle/ trying to hold noodles and inject the sample.

I wondered about liver and fatty tumors too, but her hormonal behavior is so much like it was that first time. i guess she could gearing up to make one..?

We hear the same story every time Julio visits his Vet: He is the sweetest, calmest, etc, etc, etc, Amazon that we see!

I have come to believe that he didn't kill anyone, this visit, so adorations!!! :D

That's what I'm saying-- I mean, if Noodles in the CALMEST they have ever seen, I imagine they see a ton of psychotic birds lol! Because she isn't a total walk in the park and she's super neurotic about certain things. I will admit that Noodles is VERY VERY gentle to others in a vet setting (probably because she knows they have all of the power to do what they want to her lol). They think I'm crazy for being worried she will fly into a wall or something if they just place her on the unfamiliar xray table and walk off, but she's pulling the wool over their eyes I think lol....The toweling does get her super-sexual, so maybe she can't be sassy and saucy at the same time...but it amazes me because the behavior they are calling calm, is not my definition of calm.

She hasn't ever bitten a vet or tech-- and they are always shocked she doesn't try to bite me in the event that we have to pry her off my shoulder into the towel (oy.. "don't let them take me my love!"). I guess the fact that they can do all of these exams etc without sedating her means she's calmer than some--But...she's kind of high strung with regard to things that many other birds tolerate...like swings, harnesses, new settings, new furniture etc.

She may just be starting to make eggs. No shell yet, would make them hard to see on x ray..if sge us making eggs hopefully it progresses normally and she lays them without intervention.

agreed--- I think part of this increased hormonal activity is related to me being home more due to the pandemic. The first time, it was right after I went back to in-person teaching (march to late August) and this time, she got weird the first week after in-person teaching (following Xmas break and a week of remote teaching (17th- jan 3).

I'm anticipating that we are just coming into a vast number of Parrot owners who's Parrots are going to be on the weird side as the Humans return to Work...

Huge and Warm Amazon Feather hugs and prayers.

$300 lighter and that's without labs. No labs puts you short on important intel.

For those who haven't seen one:

On a similar note, I took Meisha in almost two years ago to run labs as I knew she was with egg. Put her on calcium. Went back in to run labs after passing the egg. While performing an exam, the doctor told me Meisha was with egg again. I did my exam right after the doctor, advising I did not see or feel what she was. The doctor was indeed in error.

nice xray. I see the white flecks by knee, they seem bright e ought to be metal in the gi, or ???

xray, gram stain, nail, beak, attempted blood and did physical exam (and that was refunded)

I still think it's an egg and that the shell just hadn't formed fully or fallen low enough or something (b/c is was a standing xray..not sure how much they show).

She's still off but perky...I hate this because I know it's going to turn into an emergency visit with work etc...It's either an egg or something crazy and if it's an egg, I doubt she would lay it after injection 1 of prostaglandins (because she's a wuss) and so I'm guessing it will take 2...if I get there by 5:45 or so, add 12 hours (hours between shot 1 and 2) to that and I'm running into work time. Even if I take her and drop her for observation at 7:30 when the vet opens , it would still mess with work b/c I have to be AT work around that time and vet is an hour away...I already took 3 days for her earlier this year...so if i go in after, work, I'd be there at the earliest by 5, but then I'd have to back by opening next day, and then for a full-day hold unless I took a half day :( ughhhh

Her poop is much less, appetite is less (but still eating)--doesn't seem SICK, but off.... twitchy/neurotic behavior=up, hormones= super high since this started about a week ago, some straining to poop, but periodic, vent looks normal(ISH) as in not prolapsed-- but dilated or puckering often..

Perching fine, talking, demanding--- just acting kind of like someone on cocaine (maybe a bit less...). I KNOW she's being weird because I notice everything about her behavior, but the average Joe would think she was acting like she always does.

So sorry to know you are going through all this again, noodles. My own chronic egg-laying little minx is spending a bit of cage time this morning while I potter about the house doing chores, otherwise I know for a fact she will bury herself between the cushions on the couch the moment my back is turned and get herself all eggy again. Wishing the two of you all the very best, I have my fingers toes and eyes crossed for both of you!

I know her first egg was huge and she had trouble passing it.. but that was a well past sexual maturity female and her first egg, that can happen. But if she us making eggs again you have a good chance she will lay them normal, fingers crossed

I freaking hope so lol! How are you going to go that long after sexual maturity in my house and then suddenly start laying YEARS later over Christmas break or covid quarantine (AHH/LOL!)?!?! Touching was pretty much the same then and now too--it's not like I hold her all day and let her in boxes etc when I'm home :( She's off the chain (meaning crazy/excited/wild- no, I do not chain her) if you give a box or cubby though- I put a paper towel under her last night (thinking her egg might fall and I didn't want it to break, so I padded it slightly)...woke up and found a shredded nest mess.

THANKS GUYS--- not ranting at you-- just laughing/screaming about 20-21'
