Parrots

Hi

I would like to buy some cockatoos for my "parrots' home", a big outdoor cage, some species might be noisier than others? What about the yellow-crested cockatoo and the white crested cockatoo? Is their a difference in their "singing"? Hope you can help me.

Regards

Cockatoos can be VERY loud! If you live anywhere near neighbors you should reconsider keeping them outside. If neighbors are close, they will likely complain about the noise. I can hear my indoor cockatoos sometimes when I am out at the barn, over 100 yards from my house!

If you look into aviary birds you'll find there are quite a few species of parrot that can be kept in an outdoor aviary, but unless you live in the middle of nowhere with no neighbours to consider I'm afraid cockatoos aren't one of them. They're incredibly noisy birds, and if you have more than one the levels go up dramatically again.

In terms of song, the smaller toos are like feeding metal into a band saw and the larger ones somewhat more akin to a tyrannosaur with a toothache. Either way, it's not the prettiest of noises.

This literally made me LAUGH OUT LOUD. :D:D:D:D:D

Lol, that's probably the best description of a too's call that I've ever read.

My little conures could wake the dead when they jovially greet us!

I love that description of their sound, too. My husband says Rocky's shrieking makes his ears bleed. Thankfully, Rocky doesn't shriek a lot. He's a good boy. But when he DOES ... wow.

My Cockatoo is loud if she does not get attention. If show knows someome is home she will scream until the person comes to the cage and picks her up. If there are several people a the house she will not make much noise. If I am there she is more cuddly and talks a little bit. If no one is home she is quiet. I have a wireless camera at my place so I can watch her when I am at work but now show is at my parents house since they are retired and can spend lots more time with her.

But.. If you are looking to get more birds, don't use out door cages or only use for when you are hanging out outside. If no one is home and the bird is outside then there could be an issue. Stray Cat or Dog...

Mine are generally loudest in the morning and towards sundown. Occasionally they break out in a group chorus during the day in response to loud transient noises such as lawnmowers, sirens, loud vehicles, barking dogs, etc.

I live in a residential development in a house with dual-pane windows and have had no noise complaints. But I try to be as careful as possible with windows open limited to normal waking hours. Thankfully I live in a pet-friendly community, but outdoor aviaries would never work!

My dads cockatoo is the loudest bird I have EVER heard. His jungle calls could rival a big macaw:52: and can be heard a mile down the road when he's outside in the summer. He tends to vocalize at the crack of dawn and around the time my dad gets home from work (he knows when his favorite human comes home lol). The evening vocalizations are so annoying and ear-splitting. Jayyj's description of their screams is quite accurate. It is terrible and it takes a special person to have the, um, 'patience' to deal with such loud and vocal birds. My parents don't have particularly close neighbors, but the WHOLE NEIGHBORHOOD knows they have parrots.

Cockatoos really are not suitable as aviary birds anyways. They are highly social (with humans) and really do best as indoor house pets for people who have TONS of time (6+ hours a DAY) to dedicate to playing/interacting with them. If you are looking for low-noise birds who do well in an aviary, I would look at pigeons, doves or possibly rosellas (if you want a brighter bird). Stay away from cockatoos though.

Whhaaaattttt? How can you even say that? Look at me, here's my innocent look!

The face of innocence, indeed. Those eyes are proclaiming: "I don't scream. I don't scream. I don't scream...."

I wonder if Poppy and Gabby were playing together? Gabby took a bath in his water-bowl yesterday and then apparently played with one of his colored wood toys. He now has yellow and blue tinges on his breastbone area!

Scott, Gabby and Poppy would probably be good friends. I almost think it's intentional, it's hard to catch Poppy without streaked feathers.

So Rocky was just illustrating what that tyrannosaurus with a toothache might sound like, and was NOT screaming from approximately 7 until approximately 9:30 p.m. tonight? One of the bars on his cage is gone and he stuffed his head through the space and insisted I pet and kiss him or he would scream even more.

Oh, all right! I'll tell Poppy she isn't fooling anyone with her sweet face.

I asked Rocky why he can be so sweet one minute and such a monster the next and he said "Hmmmm?"

I must be doing something wrong. I don't consider mine loud. One barks like a dog or whimpers for hours. I have one that crows like a rooster and greets me once a day loudly. Then I have one who cackles/laughs like a witch. It is the funniest thing. We just started hearing it on Friday. But for the most part my toos are pretty quiet.

No No, I think you're doing something right! Poppy quacks like a duck, gurgles like a coffee maker, sings, plays her guitar, talks in her strange language, but she doesn't scream very often, other than her morning and evening jungle calls and, 'Hi, I'm happy you're home,' greetings.

Rocky was screaming because he suspected (correctly) that I was paying attention to the small parrots in another room. HE is the only parrot who matters. HE is the King of the Toos! Unfortunately, Clyde, Chief Bird in Charge, also believes he is the only parrot who matters and bends the knee (metaphorically speaking) to no one. Especially not to some interloper calling himself King of the Toos. Meanwhile, Mommy is exhausted trying to keep up with the never-ending demands of not one, but TWO Absolute Dictators, not to mention the Minions.
