We purchased an 8 month old pionus parrot a week ago an realized that he won't touch his veggies. we've mixed aa types of veggies to see if he would go for them and nothing. All he eats is the zupreem pellets he was use to. Any suggestions?

I offer veggies first thing in the morning before my birdie gets his favorite food (seeds). I offer them in his dish, and eat them slowly and obviously in front of him. He was on an all seed diet when I got him three months ago. He makes progress every day but it takes constant encouragement. Right now there are certain veggies he will only eat if I hold them for him, but a few months ago he thought these same veggies were mutinous alien death missiles. Good luck. May the force be with you.

The good news is that your new baby eats pellets! Could be worse and eat only sunflower seeds!

He does eat zupreem fruit flavored pellets which has been given to him by the breeder we purchased him from. I read some not so good things about these zupreem pellets including the article I'm attaching. Will be trying to switch him to Harrisons high potency coarse sooner than later.

Oh, yeayyyyyyyyyyyyyy, Harrison's! The Rb has been on them for 35+ years. Our vet credits that with his health and longevity.
Hang in there with the veggies...
Experiment.
Put them in different places.
Try different ones... the Rb as always lost his mind over long green hot chiles!

I'm glad you're here!

Word of first hand advice about chilies

BE CAREFUL handling your feathered friend after they have been munching on a habanero. If you do keep your hands away from your face and eyes

Ask me how I know:oops:

Didn't you know that Habenero was a warning word? Don't put anything in your mouth (or let it contact your face or eyes) if "Habenero" is written on the label unless you like to suffer!

Welcome. Habenero on skin, face especially near nose or eyes is to be avoided. Remember pepper spray! At one time it was made from hot peppers like it. With bird watching, you eat veggies or a new food and ACT like you're enjoying it. Your feathered friend will eventually give it a cautious trial. First thing in morning is best. He's going to be hungry and sl more willing to try new foods. You may think about making a veggie omelet. Chop veggies well, cook w egg, no butter, salt, onions, garlic. Make sure to cool before serving. A lot of parrots love egg. To get all the egg they have to eat a little veggie. Harrison pellets has been used in my house about 4 decades, with fruits and veggies. Neither of my CAG's had diet related health problems. If worried about too little or too much food weight your bird. Frequency is dependent upon you. A kitchen scale is easy to use. Weight close to same time and after morning poop.

One trick I was taught, was to take the broccoli and crumble the tops over pellets/seed. They think it's something seed-ish, and they give it a chance. The other is sprouting seeds, if your fella will eat seed.

My guys adore Zupreem :O

Broccoli that has gone to seed in the garden is very popular with my budgies. The yellow flowers are tasty and they contain tiny Broccoli seeds.
