6 mo old Eclectus :)
Many moons ago, I met this male ekkie at a Petco. He was pretty unapproachable, but stunning. This made me research by butt off and find out they are really the perfect bird for me.

So, I get on a waiting list. This was probably back in 2000 or so. A breeder I contacted wasn't having much luck with his breeding pair so I gave up on it.

Well on March 16, which happens to be my birthday <3, I saw these two 6 week old SI Eclectus, little fuzzballs that needed a home. I, of course, saw this as a fateful situation, because I have been on the look out for one of these for a longgg time. We took the plunge. He is still being weaned and I visit him every other day (50 miles total in city traffic) and even fed him and snuggled him and just spent some time bonding with him.

Back when I was researching like a crazy person I learned that you cook for them and grow sprouts. Can anyone recommend a pellet that would be a snack also what are your recipes for your ekkies?

I'm so excited to bring my boy, Eko, home. I just want to be the best parrot mom I can be to him <3

I have read many books and now websites, but you can never know too much! Plus everyone has their own recipes for the diets based around the bird.

Thanks for any insight :)

Colored pellets aren't really recommended for Ekkies because it can cause toe tapping. My Sister feeds her Si Ekkie Tops and Zupreem natural pellets. He also gets fresh fruits and veggies in the morning and sometimes a Mash recipe which is a mix of beans, collard greens, cranberries, veggies, wild rice ect.

I don't really use pellets. I feed mine fresh fruits (limited) fresh veggies, frozen veggies (heated up) and fresh greens when in season.

We're pretty healthy eaters, lots of greens and beans and organic foods so I figure he will eat with us a lot. I just want to make sure I am supplementing his diet as I should. :)

Do you pronounce Eko, echo? I was thinking just this week Echo the Ekkie would be a cool name. Specially if he was a talker.

Chico gets a small amount of Harrison's, mixed with TOP's and RoudyBush. He likes Harrison's HP the best and I plan to start mixing in the Life Time (lower fat content) ASAP.

I feed my ekkies fresh fruits and veggies as well and they get a table spoon full of seeds, mainly parakeet seeds, every night between the two. We also cook for them, lintels, sweet potatoes, chicken breast meat, egg with shells, pasta, bread, pop corn, etc etc. They also get a teaspoon of hemp seeds once a week. We decided against pellets and go all fresh for them as the extra additives vitamins etc is not good for their health and cause health issues such as toe tapping. When you feed them fresh stuffs, make sure you feed them stuffs that contain beta carotene such as broccoli, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum! You are going to love being an Ekkie slave. I'm an organic, fresh kinda eater too and it's one the reasons hubby was all for Eclectus'. He figured they'd fit right in!

Its good for their health! It helps to boost their immune system! Do some research on it and you'll see. I've been feeding hemp seeds to my birds for years.

That's awesome!
I know hemp and marijuana are different things, but I don't think it's possible to buy hemp seeds in Australia, i could be wrong, but I will be doing some more research and see if I can find any around here.
Just never heard of that before, thanks :)

Sometimes they do grow... as we found out after a 7ft one was in my mums garden :D
Its very easy to buy over here in england, not sure about oz tho.

i still love this stuff we call egg mix.
Serve it over fruit and veg, or add it to seed, or add water and its a real winner for him. xx

I know sometimes they do grow, but I'm trying not to cover that part....lol.... Where I used to live in South Dakota out in the country side, my back yard was FULL of them (as they grow wild out there) and I used to collect the seeds to feed my birds so I didn't have to buy any at that time. Now, I do not smoke it or promote it!!! I'm one of those advocate for no drug use!!!

I'm sure you've already come across Land of Vos, but in case you haven't, check out the full site. Here's the recipes page: Land of Vos - Carolyn's Recipes

I don't feel Poe pellets. Seeds are as treats only, but I do a bit of trick training each day, so he's not deprived! Extra vit A, as has already been mentioned. Otherwise, a good scouring through the Eclectus threads should provide ample tid-bits of wisdom... and mistakes to learn from :p

Welcome! :)
