my story begins when I owned a caique. I named him "rocky". I loved loved loved this bird. He was definately a clown for sure. then he matured... Not what I expected.. he was nasty .. I constantly tried to hold him despite being ripped apart... He wasn't going to change. He needed a mate... I was gutted.
I found a couple that had raised a blue and gold macaw from a hatchling. I asked if they were interesed in my little Rocky. they were actually looking for a mate for a female caique. Rocky was introduced to his potential partner.. Love at first site... Now I was stuck with the idea of going from this little bird to this bird with a BIG BEAK ! Petrified to say the least. I had them put the bird in a carrier cage and took him home. A friend of mine had to put the bird in his Huge new cage... I looked at him and admired his colors for 2 days. I had a live macaw picture in my home. I was deathly afraid to touch him..
Finally on the third day I got enough nerve to open the cage and see if he would get on my hand. He did with no problem , no biting.
6 yrs later "RIO" is my everything... Although he is coming into his mature stage he play bites but has never drew blood. He's a spoiled rotten brat.. But everyone including the pet shop in SC could not get enough of him. He tallks back, he tells you to shut up asks you what your problem is and screams his name out and yells at the dog by name... Gotta love him .. I wouldn't trade him for the world....And that's how I found my :blue1: "RIO"

Welcome to the forums! Thoroughly enjoyed your intro story, there are often happy endings. I am not familiar with caiques, but many individuals of varied species morph during puberty.

Macaws are generally - with exceptions - wonderfully cautious companions and wield their beaks with restraint. Would love to see a pic of your Rio!
